Kinglet Here One Second Gone The Next by Debra Martz
Ruby-crowned Kinglet is so named for the color of the crown, though it is usually concealed and only present on males. They are hyperactive, energetic, quick-moving, wing-flicking little songbirds and foragers in wooded habitats. Seen in S. Texas

Met a brand new today during my walk - I think maybe a young nuthatch but can't be sure. Anyone know?

Whatever the little guy is, he was brave/dumb enough to come right up to my feet. Worried at first that he was a fallen nestling, but then he flew up to a branch overhead.

Edit - Thanks Tyx (and Teresa) for identifying this - I think correctly - as a Golden-Crowned .

The smallest birbs! Bushtits, Hummingbirds, Red-breasted Nuthatch and Golden-crowned Kinglets! Some of the more challenging subjects from last year, these little ones gave me quite the workout and crash course in photography and I'm so proud of how some of these turned out!

Have about 3 more posts worth of my Favorite 2024 Photos to go and then I'll start posting some newer pics!

Ruby Crowned Kinglet Touch and Go by Debra Martz
This little Ruby-crowned Kinglet landed just to my left and quickly flitted to the next plant. I luckily got a quick shot off and it was on to the next plant and then out of sight in a few seconds.

This is an adult male ruby-crowned Kinglet (Regulus calendula). It has a few red feathers on top of its head that I was able to notice only when it flitted about in bushes.

Tiny bird mostly greyish with white eye-ring perched on a skinny branch and looking up towards a dead leaf that might potentially hide some tiny insects. It has a short tail and the red feathers on top of its head are not visible.

I was so happy to see this tiny goldcrest jumping around in our grape vines. They are tiny, fast and can easily be confused with other small birds. Until you notice their tiny golden crown, of course.

A close-up of a goldcrest, Europe's smallest bird, perched delicately on a thin, weathered branch. The bird's olive-green plumage, golden crown stripe, and fine details stand out against a soft, blurred green background.

It is always a pleasure to spot a Golden-crowned Kinglet. It is even better when you can get a good photo since they are constantly on the move.

This photo features a small bird perched delicately on a thin, leafless branch. The bird is small, with soft grayish-white plumage on its chest and belly. Its back and wings are olive-green, blending harmoniously with its surroundings. The Kinglet’s defining feature is a vibrant golden-yellow stripe on the crown of its head, bordered by bold black lines on either side, which gives it a striking appearance.

The bird’s tiny, sharp beak points forward, as though it is alert and observant. Its wings have subtle yellow accents, complementing the golden crown. The background is softly blurred in neutral tones, emphasizing the bird as the focal point and evoking a quiet, serene atmosphere. The Kinglet’s delicate posture and vivid crown make it a charming and vibrant subject in this natural setting.

@loren , I noticed some activity in the spruce trees earlier today. Grabbed my camera and discovered it was a Golden-crowned kinglet, a first for mee and for the garden. I guess they are passing through from their breeding grounds up north. All the other passerines have been gone for a while. The photo isn't the best, but it was cool!

A small bird is sitting between spruce tips, looking mostly away from the camera. It's upper wings are grey, and lower down, they have a yellow and black stripey pattern. Its breast is very light grey. A bright yellow central stripe atop the head is very noticeable. The yellow is flanked by broad black stripes.

Golden-crowned kinglets are everywhere in Prospect Park these days (Brooklyn, NY). They are very small and never sit still...

Golden-crowned Kinglets showed up in the neighborhood this week after seemingly being gone all summer. Since my dad was an audiologist I am aware my high-frequency sensitivity has dropped somewhat in recent years - so I am always particularly pleased to still be able to pick up these near-ultrasonic calls above 8 kilohertz. Wee lisping trills up in the cedars like someone whistling through their teeth. #Birding #Kinglet #Oregon

Always amazes me how these little guys can hold it together in the winter. Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglets are in constant motion and have metabolisms in overdrive, but are almost hummingbird-class tiny. AND, they are primarily insect-eaters, although they eat seeds in the winter. It was seasonably (whatever that means) cold at Hempstead Lake State Park (NY) today, but they were zipping around.

Golden-crowned Kinglets "are tiny songbirds with a rounded body, short wings, and skinny tail. They have relatively large heads, and their bills are short and thin, perfect for gleaning small insects. Golden-crowned Kinglets are pale olive above and gray below, with a black-and-white striped face and bright yellow-orange crown patch. They have a thin white wingbar and yellow edges to their black flight feathers." (AllAboutBirds).Ruby-crowned Kinglets "are tiny songbirds with relatively large heads, almost no neck, and thin tails. They have very small, thin, straight bills. Ruby-crowned Kinglets are olive-green birds with a prominent white eyering and white wingbar. This wingbar contrasts with an adjacent blackish bar in the wing. The “ruby crown” of the male is only occasionally visible." (AllAboutBirds)
