Exploring spring through a different spectrum 🌿📷

On a recent trip to Klamath Falls, Oregon, I tested a 720nm infrared filter on my full-spectrum camera. This shot captures a weeping willow just leafing out beside an old barn. Thanks to the high chlorophyll content and strong afternoon light, the tree lit up beautifully in infrared. Post-processing brought the sky back to a familiar blue by channel-swapping red and blue, giving this dreamy, otherworldly result.

Infrared truly reveals a hidden side of nature — especially in spring.

On an early spring trip to the Klamath Falls Oregon area I was anxious to try out a new 720 nanometer filter on my full spectrum modified camera. This filter only allows the very red end of the visible part of the spectrum along with the near infrared portion of the spectrum to reach the camera’s filter. The resulting image is recorded by the camera, which is still trying to produce a normal color image, looking extremely red. By reversing the blue and red color channels in post production the red sky can be turned closer to blue which we’re used to seeing. Foliage, especially deciduous foliage in spring when it contains high levels of chlorophyll, dramatically reflects infrared energy making it really “pop” in this type of photography. This weeping willow near the old barn on this ranch was just leafing out for the spring and the mid afternoon sun was on the correct side of the tree to really light up those new leaves and the sky cooperated nicely with some interesting clouds as well.

loc.gov/pictures/item/20177733

This black and white photograph depicts a rural scene with three individuals, presumably a family, standing in front of what appears to be an unfinished wooden shack. The woman is dressed modestly in mid-length dress shoes and stockings, folded her arms as if pondering or waiting for something significant. Her expression conveys determination or concern.

The environment is desolate yet imbued with stories of rural life possibly after significant hardship or displacement as suggested by their attire, wooden makeshift dwelling, and sparse belongings around. The tire outside implies resourcefulness in using available materials for construction. A clock mounted on the side of the shack indicates a sense of daily routine amidst adversity.
