When archeologists in Nara unearthed what could be the world's longest sword and a unique shield-shaped mirror, they were stunned — and excited about the clues it had to offer about ancient Japan. japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/05/

I put together a collection of 3D models I made from pottery recovered from the Tsuzuraozaki Lakebed site in Shiga prefecture. Locals have been pulling up this pottery in their nets for 100 years, with the oldest pottery dating back to the Initial Jomon period, over 7000 years ago. 🏺

The tomb of king Muryeong is perhaps one of the most impressive tombs from the Baekje kingdom of ancient Korea, both in its design and the treasure found inside it. worldhistory.org/article/963/t #History #Baekje #Cheonmachong #Kofun

Goguryeo (Koguryo) ruled northern Korea during the Three Kingdoms period from the 1st century BCE to 7th century CE, and the best evidence of the kingdom's prosperity and artistry can be found in the many surviving tombs of the period. worldhistory.org/article/966/t #History #Goguryeo #GwanggaetotheGreat #Kofun

As best I've been able to put together, the earliest haniwa were pots and other dishes, possibly to hold ritual offerings or similar. The round stands that they were placed on became the round haniwa, with other types of objects sitting on top in place of the bowls, etc. These got more and more elaborate through the end of the kofun period.

Truly fascinated at the concept of wooden "haniwa". Clay statues, especially the cylindrical ones that give haniwa their name, are well known, but that isn't the only thing that topped the ancient mounded tombs. In Kyushu, stone figures were popular, and stone stone figures have also been found near kofun in the Asuka area of the Nara Basin. This is the first time I've really seen wooden figures.

Trekking around Asuka at the end of the day. Beautiful colors around some pretty impressive kofun, or old tumuli. There is the ruined Ishibutai kofun, where you can enter the stone burial chamber. Then there were kofun attributed to Temmu and Kimmei--ancient Japanese sovereigns.
