One of the engines from the Kurobe Gorge Railway.

I gather the railway was built for the construction of the Kurobe Dam, and then turned over to tourist use on completion of the dam.

The green sign on the front says that it is a sister railway with the Alishan Railway in Taiwan.

Steam hanging like an apparition over the geothermal hot water fountain in the main square outside the station at after returning from . A fun experiment for 2019 in .

A night image of an approximately three meter circular fountain with a tall vertical central jet, surrounded by several smaller vertical jets. Above it, a cloud of heated steam hangs, like a shroud. The fountain is surrounded by cobblestones, and the background is lit with globular street lights.

Still in this 2019 from , , but closer to my wheelhouse of geometry and dark. There's several of these tunnels to walk through, after leaving the . This one provided the best options. As always, I’m in awe of civil engineering.

A concrete tunnel, with a tiny patch of light at the end. There are alternating bands of light and dark running around the tunnel, marking the location of each wall-mounted fluorescent tube lighting fixture. There is a central drainage grille running down the centre of the tunnel’s floor.

Because why wouldn't you build your hydro-electric infrastructure to resemble European mediaeval fortresses? Another from 2019 , again from the at , . architectural tastes are so much fun, and this town has strong Swiss Chalet style in places, presumably for the skiers. The haze, and shallow depth of field feel a bit like an old film photo.

A… I don’t know what to call it. It’s a small European castle in the river, joined to the much higher bank by a bridge. I assume it’s for part of the hydroelectric infrastructure, but it’s a castl, in bright turquoise water, the far side of the gorge is almost to the top of the frame. On the far left, is the concrete structure of the tunnel the tourist train is travelling through periodically along the line.

The next and next in 2019, is from the at . The brilliant turquoise water, I think is from the sediment of the white rock from which the area is composed. is 's deepest valley, and has this wonderful little train, used for the construction of the hydroelectric project, but now a tourist attraction. The season is just starting to turn to Autumn, as you can see in the colour of the trees.

A Lake formed by the Kurobe Gorge hydroelectric system. Green and turning red trees fill the sides of the picture, a bright yellow string of buoys crosses the bright turquoise water. A vivid red bridge is in the centre of the picture.

First of my 2019 of . The main square in , a delightful mountain town, known for , a multitude of public , and . I couldn't resist a long exposure of the little train that brought us up from the coast, through the valley's farmland. The streetlight is just the right size to match the scale of the moon. My technical OCD is pinging about the station entrance being overexposed, but I can live with it :)

An intersection at night with a streetlamp showing in the sky above background mountains, looking lie the moon. Streaks of light are moving through the scene as a result of a long exposure of the local train passing.
