He invented a sail control, bought his employer’s company, and was one of Philadelphia’s richest men. He helped form the Convention of Color, funded and anonymously wrote for The Liberator, was president of the American Anti-Slavery Society. #Kwanzaa Day 6 #Kuumba creativity beneficial to the community. Thomas L Jennings was the 1st Black man to hold a US patent. He was a free man and achieved a dry cleaning patent in 1821. He bought his wife’s indentured servitude, was an abolitionist, and in 1854 his daughter Elizabeth was the 1st Black woman to refuse to give up her seat on public transit. They used their fortune to sue the rail company and won. Her lawyer? Future 21st US President Chester A. Arthur.
