I mean... if they are to be useful they need to have memory of what they learn, and reference these learnings not through their current context, but rather a more long-term store.

How does that work? Is there like systems for simulating our working memory and long-term memory or something?

While I have not spent that much time on this topic, I have not come across articles discussing this at length.
