DAY THREE: Another song Selena y Los Dinos covered was La Bamba. I think the most notable rendition of the song was from Ritchie Valens. The reason why I like Selena y Los Dinos' version so much is that you can tell it's from their early days. Selena didn't speak Spanish in the earlier years and in the song, you can hear her say, "Oye tu, ven pa'qua" instead of "ven pa'ca". This song is from her self titled 1989 album, Selena.

Anyway, a chap from the BBC Spanish Service wrote to Smash Hits about the translation of the lyric, and suggested that "la bamba" is the name of the dance, and perhaps shouldn't be translated as "the goat". He agreed that the lyric made little sense in Spanish or English.

Dear Black Type,
I am not sure if the lyrics and the respective translation of the song "La Bamba" were a joke or not, but if they were done in all seriousness, I am afraid there is a very big misunderstanding, because neither the Spanish lyrics nor the translation are accurate.

As my mother tongue is Spanish, I think I have the authority to give you the correct lyrics: "Para bailar la Bamba
Para bailar la Bamba se necesita
Una poca de gracia
Una poca de gracia pa'mi, pa'tí,
Ay arriba y arriba
Ay arriba y arriba por ti seré, por ti seré, por ti seré,

Yo no soy marinero, yo no soy marinero, soy capitán
Soy capitán, soy capitán.
Bamba, bamba
Bamba, bamba...etc..."

The term "goat" which you used does not make any sense, as "La Bamba" is the term used for a specific kind of rhythm or dance in Spanish; it does not have an equivalent word in English, so the translation, roughly, would be as follows: "To dance La Bamba To dance La Bamba you need to have a little gracefulness A little gracefulness for you and me Come on let's go, come on let's go" (Or something like that, it does not make sense in Spanish and it does not have to in English. However, it is an expression meaning "be happy, have a good time, come and dance..." Literally it means "and up and up" or "and above and above" or "high and high".) Anyway, to continue: "For you I will be For you I will be... Bamba, Bamba..." (the rest is OK)If you ever need some assistance with songs written in Spanish, do not hesitate to contact me. I will help you with pleasure.
Yours faithfully, Julio Garcia, Latin American Spanish Service, BBC.

Jings! Jings! Jings! Jings! Los Lobos are still number one with "La bamba".

Smash Hits gave a very loose translation of the lyric. "To dance the goat you need to have a little gracefulness", and so on.

If you're bored - perhaps stuck indoors with a fractured wrist - you might tweak the scansion of these mistranslated lines to fit the tune.

"LA BAMBA" OR "THE GOAT”
A Translation by The Smash Hits Department of Wonky Foreign Languages

To dance the goat,
To dance the goat,
You need to have a little gracefulness.
A little gracefulness for me.
For Jings! Jings! Jings! Jings!

(Are you quite sure about this?-Ed.)
(Yes-A Translator.)

For you it will be,
For you it will be,
For you it will be,

I'm not a sailor,
I'm not a sailor, I am a captain,
I am a captain,
I am a captain.

Goat, goat, goat.

(How very odd-Ed.)
(Yes, it is rather odd, isn't it? - A Translator.)
