Dr Padma Dolma, a gynaecologist at Leh’s Sonam Norboo Hospital, confirms that more women now come with recurring vaginal or cervical infections. “Earlier, water was available and temperatures were manageable. But now, with rising heat and drying sources, hygiene is a major challenge for women who keep moving across eastern Ladakh,” she says. “I now see more such cases in Ladakh than I did in Delhi”

Ladakh: A mirror cracking under climate change

➖✨➖✨➖

"It’s easy to think of Ladakh as India’s most remote area, useful for tourism brochures and border maps. In reality, it is a mirror that shows our common fate. You can see the hunger of the farmer in Bihar, the thirst of the worker in Delhi, and the worry of families on the beaches in those glaciers that are melting."

Rendering Houses in Ladakh by Sophie Day, 2023

Sophie Day explores the houses that are imagined, built, repurposed, and dismantled among different communities in Ladakh, drawing attention to the ways in which houses are like and unlike people.A handful of in-depth ‘house portraits’ are selected for the insight they provide into major regional developments, based on the author’s extended engagement since 1981

Most of these houses are Buddhist and associated with the town of Leh. Drawing on both image and text, collaborative methods for assembling material show the intricate relationships between people and places over the life course. Innovative methods for recording and archiving such as ‘storyboards’ are developed to frame different views of the house. This approach raises analytical questions about the composition of life within and beyond storyboards, offering new ways to understand a region that intrigues specialists and non-specialists alike.
