The Current joins Deep South Today
The Current is joining Deep South Today, a nonprofit network dedicated to growing local journalism across the South. We’ll be the third operation in the network, which includes Verité News in New Orleans and Mississippi Today, winner of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize.
The partnership will unlock more resources, and enable us to staff up to cover new beats and become even more ambitious in how we report on and connect you with what matters in Lafayette.
But it won’t change anything about who we are. We will keep our name, our values, our people and our editorial independence.
This FAQ will take you through the main points about what this partnership means. If your question isn’t answered here, email christiaan@thecurrentla.com.
What is Deep South Today?
Deep South Today is a nonprofit organization with a mission to grow local journalism in the South. It now operates three newsrooms Mississippi Today, Verite and The Current. You can read more about the organization here.
Is The Current still going to be … The Current?
Yes. The Current will continue operating as The Current, producing the same uniquely Lafayette journalism you know and love.
Is The Current’s name going to change?
No. We’ll continue to publish under The Current across all of our existing platforms. More importantly, our core identity as a Lafayette-based, Lafayette-focused news outlet will remain unchanged.
What about The Current’s staff?
All of The Current’s staff and contributors will continue working for The Current.
Will The Current’s coverage change?
The Current will continue to produce in-depth journalism about Lafayette with the same vigor and flavor you know. That’s our core mission, and it’s not changing. Apart from adding new people, new beats and some new tools, nothing about our coverage will change.
Who will make editorial decisions?
The Current’s editorial team remains independent. All editorial decisions — what to cover, how to cover it — will be made by the editorial leadership in Lafayette.
Where is my donation going?
Directly to The Current. Every dollar you give directly supports the local, in-depth journalism you count on. In the coming months, we’ll transition to a new donation platform, but your contributions will continue to fund what we do and how we do it, in the same way it always has. If you want to support us moving forward the old-fashioned way, checks can still be written directly to The Current.
Do you still need local support?
Absolutely. Local support is what got us to this point, and we’ll continue to rely on local members, donors and sponsors to power our local journalism. Think of Deep South Today as an amplifier for your donation. Your support for The Current will go even further and produce more journalism.
