A great collection of old shool Japanese horror movies, although I don't know what exactly makes them "Gothic". The Snow Woman is based on the same Lafcadio Hearn story as the shorter segment in Kwaidan.

What do ‘tengu’ demons, long-necked ‘rokurobi’ monsters and ghost stories have in common? They’re the core of a tourism push for Shimane and Tottori prefectures. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2025/02/22/travel/shimane-tottori-ghost-stories-folklore/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #life #travel #travel #yokai #supernatural #mizukishigeru #lafcadiohearn

Fun fact:
Das dickste Ding der »Collected Works of #LafcadioHearn« bei Delphi ist übrigens sein Kochbuch mit Kreolischen Rezepten.
I saw myself reading a book - This collage prose poem was derived from passages of #LafcadioHearn’s ‘Readings from a Dream-book’.

Notice that, even in Tokyo, I have seen people walking their dogs with flashlights. They put neon lights on the dog. This makes me think that the demand for light is everywhere, but in Japan the following principle seems to reign:
If you want light, pay for it. https://silviazuletaromano.com/english/nikko-reflections-on-the-onsen-culture/ #japan #japaneseonsen #tanizaki #lafcadiohearn #japaneseliterature #nikko
I often saw this book in stores and ignored it because I wrongly assumed that it was just another rehash of Kwaidan. It is actually a very good collection of Hearn's ghostly tales culled from his various books.

A new biography on Lafcadio Hearn charts the course of the writer’s 54-year life and shows how his years in Cincinnati and Japan were formative periods. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2023/10/08/books/the-outsider-lafcadio-hearn/?utm_content=buffercf768&utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=bffmstdn #culture #books #lafcadiohearn #stevekemme

A fascinating programme about Lafcadio Hearn's love of insects and the Japanese vocabulary related to them. My family and I were lucky enough to guided around the wonderful "The Poetry of Insects" exhibition at the Lafcadio Memorial Museum in Matsue by Bon Koizumi, great-grandson of Lafcadio Hearn, and his wife Shoko when we visited Matsue last year.

I wandered into the Wikipedia article on Hearn and started reading his biography. I had no idea what I was in for. It is quite a ride! If you don't already know the story of Hearn's life, I highly recommend reading it so you can experience the inexorably widening eyes and dropping jaw for yourself.
