I know there are all kinds of newer shinier things available, but #debian 13 with #plasma on a not too ancient intel #laptop is a really nice experience right now.

Linux 6.16 RC3 released!

Linux 6.16 RC3 is now live for developers and curious users to try out. All the interesting changes from performance improvements to bug fixes have been integrated to this release candidate. This includes fixes (1, 2) for a 30-year old Creative SoundBlaster AWE32 ISA sound card, which caused systems with this sound card to freeze with PipeWire.

In the release announcement for this version of the kernel, Linus Torvalds said:

So rc2 was smaller than usual, but rc3 seems to be right in the usual ballpark for this time, so everything looks entirely normal.

The diff is dominated by some wireless networking and gpu driver updates, but "dominated" is relative: it's not really anything really huge, it's just that there are few other bigger changes, and so all the rest is fairly small and spread out.

Nothing really stands out to me, so I'll just point people at the shortlog below to get a taste of the kinds of fixes we have.

Why not try out this awesome pre-release of Linux 6.16?

Let's ask the fediverse for recommendations.

I currently own a Dell XPS 15 9530. This laptop has performed fine... except that the keyboard has a manufacturing defect that makes it become harder to type on in over time. I've hacked it, but it is still getting worse.

Therefore, I'm not looking for a Dell for my next laptop. They blew it. My history with them was;

- I bought Dell exclusively until their quality went down.

- Then I bought Asus or ACER or other brands.

- Then I came back to Dell. The quality issue seemed fixed. The first laptop I bought after coming back was fine. But the 2nd one (my current laptop) has the keyboard problem.

Linux is my main OS. I'm capable of speccing out a laptop for my needs. What I really need is brand recommendations. I'm going to look at what System76 offers. I'd prefer a brand that takes Linux to heart.

I think there are other brands than System76 that take Linux to heart.

Personal experience with a brand is preferred.
