Ready on both sides. While the old powers consolidate against Giorgia.

The ancient Romans knew how to distinguish between time of peace and time of war, and possessed a profound sense of history and human nature. Among the most wise Latin sayings, there is one I would like to propose to you again: “Ad utrumque parati.” Translation: one must be prepared for both scenarios, for one situation and its opposite.

In this final referendum push, we, dear readers, must also be “ad utrumque parati.” If the Yes wins, it will be a great page in history, and our country will not have wasted an opportunity as unfortunately happened in the 1980s when the No to nuclear was said. Forty years later, we are still regretting that misguided and superficial choice. If instead the No wins, one will have to prepare for a year of poison and low blows until the 2027 vote. There’s no point in avoiding it: a mass of old Italian powers has united against Giorgia Meloni, and is trying to turn the referendum into a reckoning against the government.

And it’s not just the most foolish wing of the ANM, which at least doesn’t hide. You should see the spectacle here at Roma Centro: the smiles of the high bureaucrats, the tremors of the eternal and unkillable officials, the jostling of the usual protagonists of the Italian deep state, the complicities that you see in a glance or a phrase thrown off.

They relish the idea of a comeback where the merit of the reform doesn’t count; they hope for the No as an opportunity for a purge against the government. And they are already moving forward with their dreams: to mire future executive measures, the siege of the compromised magistrates, the return after a confused vote to technocratic governments, with the support of the media leaning left (almost all of them, including television). They dream of reducing the Meloni government to a parenthesis, to an “incident” to overcome. Not to mention, after 2027, of 2029: when they plan to prevent a president from arriving at the highest hill coming from the right-wing coalition. Not everything, but a part of this scheme passes through March 22-23. Don’t give them this satisfaction.

Pelagius

He was a Christian theologian known as an ascetic monk & promoting a system of doctrines (termed Pelagianism by the Catholic Church), which emphasized human choice in salvation & denied original sin.

Pelagius was accused of heresy at the Synod of Diospolis in 415. His doctrines were harshly criticized by Augustine of Hippo, especially the Pelagian views about mankind’s good nature & individual responsibility for choosing asceticism. Pelagius especially stressed the freedom of human will.

Pelagius was active between circa 390 & 418. Pelagius was tall & portly in appearance. He was also highly educated, spoke, & wrote Latin & Greek with great fluency. He was well-versed in theology. Pelagius became better known around 380 when he moved to Rome. There, he enjoyed a reputation for austerity. When Alaric sacked Rome in 410, Pelagius & his follower, Caelestius, fled to Carthage, where he continued his work.

The view that mankind can avoid sinning, & that humans can freely choose to obey God’s commandments, is held to have stood at the core of Pelagian teaching. Pelagius stressed human autonomy & freedom of will. For Pelagius, grace consisted of the gift of free will, the Law of Moses, & the teachings of Jesus.

According to Augustine, Pelagius saw baptism of infants as useless because they had no sin. Celestius, who was a disciple of Pelagius, also denied original sin & the necessity of infant baptism for salvation. Seeking to undo his condemnation, Pelagius wrote a letter &statement of belief to Pope Zosimus, Pope Innocent I’s successor, arguing that he was orthodox.

In these, he articulated his beliefs so as not to contradict what the synods condemned. Pope Zosimus was persuaded by Celestius to reopen the case. But opposition from the African bishops & Emperor Honorius forced Pope Zosimus to condemn & excommunicate Celestius & Pelagius in 418. Pelagianism was condemned at the Council of Carthage in 418. Augustine, shocked that Pelagius & Celestius weren’t denounced as heretics, had called the Council of Carthage in 418.

After his condemnation, Pelagius was expelled from Jerusalem. St. Cyril of Alexandria allowed him to settle in Egypt. He’s not heard of afterwards.

His death didn’t end his teachings. Although those who followed him may have modified those teachings. Because little info actually remains concerning Pelagius’ actual teachings, some of his doctrines possibly were subject to revision & suppression by his enemies.

Pelagius & Caelestius were declared heretics by the First Council of Ephesus in 431.

Belief in Pelagianism & Semipelagianism was common for the next few centuries. Especially in Britain, Palestine,& North Africa. St. Germanus went to Britain to fight Pelagianism in or around 429 AD. In Wales, St. David was credited with convening the Synod of Brefi & the Synod of Victory against the followers of Pelagius in the 6th century.

Lion Monument, and fountain, Lucerne, Switzerland between ca. 1890 and ca. 1900. Views of Switzerland

#LionMonument #Lucerne #Switzerland #Viewsof #Latin #photography #historicalPhotos #photochrom

loc.gov/pictures/item/20017030

The image depicts a historic stone relief carving on the side of a rocky cliff, featuring an intricately sculpted lion reclining with its head resting on a scroll. Beneath it is text that appears to be in Latin or Classical Greek. A notable feature is a water fountain emerging from within the rock face above the lion, creating a visual representation of pouring light onto the scene below. This waterfall forms part of an ornamental pond where swans are seen swimming. The setting includes lush greenery and trees surrounding the site, with a fence in the foreground that seems to demarcate the viewing area for visitors. A small wooden structure or shelter is visible on one side near the water's edge, suggesting this might be a place of interest or landmark within Lucerne, Switzerland.

loc.gov/pictures/item/20017030

The image depicts a historical stone monument situated by the serene waters, likely representing an important figure or event. The relief carving is intricate and portrays a reclining lion with detailed fur texture, possibly symbolizing strength or protection. Surrounding text in Latin inscribes "HEVETIORUM FIDEL AC VIRTVI," indicating fidelity to Helvetians and virtues of loyalty. Below the main inscription lies another lengthy passage that appears historical and narrative, though not legible from this angle. The setting includes lush greenery on either side with a wooden fence guiding visitors' path toward or away from the monument. A small hut-like structure rests in calm water adjacent to the rock face, adding quaint charm amidst grandeur.
