24 décembre. C’est la fête aujourd’hui, alors voici plusieurs mots pour terminer ! Ils appartiennent tous au vocabulaire lié aux émanations de gaz volcaniques : fumerolle, solfatare, mofette, mazuku.
Fumerolle est un terme générique, qui désigne un évent d’où sortent des gaz volcaniques.
Solfatare est parfois employé pour parler d’une fumerolle riche en soufre. Le mot vient de l’italien Solfatara, une zone volcanique des Champs Phlégréens, nom lui-même issu du latin sulpha terra, « terre soufrée ».
Mofette, quant à lui, désigne un évent d’où sort plutôt du dioxyde de carbone. Lui aussi provient du latin (via l’italien) mephitis, « exhalaison pestilentielle ».
Enfin, le dioxyde de carbone peut percoler à travers la roche poreuse, sans point de sortie réellement identifié, et s’accumuler au fond des creux topographiques. Cela forme un mazuku, terme d’origine swahilie, le phénomène étant courant dans les régions volcaniques d’Afrique de l’Est.
On pourrait encore citer le terme stufa (de l’italien signifiant poêle), utilisé comme synonyme de fumerolle mais désormais jugé archaïque.
