On a soft spring morning, gentle sunlight highlights four wooden adirondack chairs arranged on green lawns. Surrounded by a tall trees and colorful wildflowers, the views of the distant hills beneath clear blue skies create a serene and inviting atmosphere. Several years ago I spied a scarlet tanager in just this spot. I've never seen one before or since ... they don't frequent my backyard feeders at home, but on that day I had my camera and the 150-500mm Sigma lens with me and shoot that pretty birdie I did! But the distance was still too great, so even with the big lens, my captures were only useful for personal memories of the moment. To honor the birdie, I painted two of the little guys into this scene, as an homage to what Mother Nature has up her sleeves, if we're only in the right place at the right time to see. And hopefully have our camera handy, too! Loosely based on my own photo and digitally hand painted in Corel Painter 2023 using the Wacom tablet and art pen stylus. A drive through the heart of the Laurel Highlands in Central PA , USA, brings visual gem after visual gem. The sapphire blues of the skies, the ruby reds of the barns, the golden fields and the emerald hills and crops … all are a delight and the picture perfect examples of a summer's day in the country. An old wooden fence cuts across a field of wildflowers on top of Blue Knob Mountain, a part of the Laurel Highlands of the Appalachians, just as the sun begins to set on a glorious spring evening. Above the distant mountain range which has caught the changing color in the hazy air a layer of curly clouds transform from soft whites to peaches and roses and blues. "The magic of Blue Knob" is an expression my husband and his friends have used for many years. It usually refers to skiing conditions and unexpected snow storms but to me it also means the brilliance of autumn or the sweet softness of spring. Blue Knob All Seasons Resort is located in Central Pennsylvania and includes skiing and snow boarding in winter and golfing and hiking in spring, summer and fall. This image is my own photo (not from stock or public domain) which has been treated to a few tweaks in Photoshop. A road trip into the countryside on a glorious autumn day, when Mother Nature and the sunshine had conspired to create colors that almost break our hearts with beauty, was a family tradition when I was a little girl. My dad would proclaim the day and off we'd go … often with a picnic basket in the trunk and always with smiles on our faces. Sometimes we'd manage our drives on this those perfect rare and brief colorful and vibrant days … as often, though, we'd find we were just past peak color, or not quite there yet. Or worse yet, the season itself just never really reached its potential at all. As I grew older I lived in an area where the "leaf peepers" were an expected weekend hazard if you needed to get to the store on a sunny autumn day. You could always spot the peepers. They drove slowly, and maybe even weaved back and forth, and you could almost hear the ooo's and ahhh's coming from their cars. I didn't mind really … I enjoyed the beauty right along with them. The location of "A Vibrant Day" is Blue Knob State Park between Pavia and Claysburg, PA. Just beyond on the right, where the road dips down is a steep hill that gets dicey in winter's icy and snowy times, then another hill going up and up to the top of Blue Knob Mountain and the ski resort there. Magical beauty in all times of the year!! Image sketched and painted by hand, digitally, and influenced by and very loosely based on one of my own photos using Corel Painter 2019.
