Ich habe heute Körperformen geübt und alte Farben aufgebraucht. Diese hier ist überraschend plastisch geworden.

I practiced findung shapes of bodies. I used old tubes of paint.

About the art instructor:

Dr. Julius Csotonyi is a Vancouver-based scientific illustrator and natural history fine artist. He has a scientific background in ecology (MSc) and microbiology (PhD) which has taken him to study sensitive ecosystems, from sand dunes in the Rocky Mountain parks to hydrothermal vents at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

These experiences have fuelled a strong resolve to work toward preserving the earth’s biota. Painting biological subjects is one means that he uses to both enhance public awareness of biological diversity and to motivate concern for its welfare.

He paints murals and panels that have appeared in numerous museums (e.g. the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History), press release images for scientific publications, books, stamp sets (e.g. the 2018 “Sharks of Canada” set for Canada Post), and coins for the Royal Canadian Mint. His work is viewable on his online gallery, csotonyi.com

OK, that one I'm happy with

Darth Vader drawn with white ink, white chalk, and pastel on a black piece of paper

This is among some of the less sexy parts of my #Art journey. Last night I said I wanted to get better at drawing faces/heads from different angles, and that I wanted to make my next couple drawings dedicated to that…. Well i did that this evening. There wasn’t much time so could only try it once, but I followed a neat looking guide on breaking down faces and their angles into spheres. It was helpful and I tried to apply it to last nights drawing with… not great results #LearnArt #MastoArt

Part of me thinks that it is very poetic to draw corporate meetings with everybody being an anonymous box: we are devoid of features, interchangeable. Inhuman. A mere resource.

Sketch of multiple people meeting, but everybody is a small number of geometric shapes

Captured this between some meetings and training. I think I'm done with it.

Ok last one. Whitney aspires to be the Nietzschian prose stylist of scribbling in your sketchbook. The demon Apathy stalks us all, and Whitney does NOT want you to succumb.

Carry this passage with you, fellow soldiers.

#WhitneyWatercolor #bookstodon #learnArt #motivation #inspiration

A passage from “The Complete Guide to Watercolor” by Edgar A. Whitney. It reads:

“DRAW CONTINUOUSLY:
In regards to drawing continuously, some of you—confronted by the demands on your time and energy-the inexorable demand for payment for goods received— will shrug off this obligation to yourself and join the category of those who "do not." At any stage of your growth, or your development of taste, questioning, faltering, remember that is the point at which thousands quit, incapable of grace under pressure.

"On the plains of hesitation bleach the bones of countless millions who, at the dawn of victory sat down to rest, and resting, died...

Author unknown”

This is another one with several gems, including a name-drop, the phrase “Heaven help you if you cannot see…” and a snappy conclusion.

If you like being compared to great artists in grandiose dramatic fashion, you can count on Edgar Whitney for that!

A passage from “The Complete Guide to Watercolor” by Edgar J. Whitney. It reads:

“THE CREATIVE CONCEPT:
Now, heaven help you if you cannot see that the concept of your activity must not be transcription. It must be translation. It is a different language with its own idiom and syntax, and the rights of the picture always come first. To try to transcribe color, value, or textures is fatal. When Rimski-Korsakov composed The Bee did he put a tape recorder in a hive? An artist does not report the fact of a thing, he expresses the truth of it in whatever language he is using. Failure to see this simple truth keeps amateurs amateurs, and dwarfs the stature of too many professionals.”

This seems like Whitney’s final word on the nature of art, except that it comes in the very first chapter, and he reaches this level of drama at least once every few pages

#WhitneyWatercolor #learnArt #bookstodon

A passage from “The Complete Guide to Watercolor” by Edgar J. Whitney. It reads:

“EMOTIONAL INVOLVEMENT:
A fine watercolor is a by-product. The objective is a state of being. This state of being, degree of concentration, forgetfulness of self, is perhaps best exemplified by the word empathy. Empathy is a one-word definition of what an artist is, his essence. Empathy is the projection of one's consciousness into another person or object in order to understand him or it better. More than sympathy, empathy is knowing how the other person or object feels.

Make no mistake about this. Every brush stroke will record inevitably your state of being the instant you make the stroke. The best access to this state of being, your objective, is through intellectual identification with the subject matter; that is, curiosity about it as natural phenomena, with the same intensity of interest that a child has touching an object for the first time. You do not have to fall in love with subject matter at first sight. Scholarly investigation of it will prove it worthy.”

Here is the quintessential Whitney passage, laying out thick exposition in a soaring tone, taking a swipe at Pollock, and finally asserting the true nature of watercolor in the simplest possible terms.

#WhitneyWatercolor #learnArt #bookstodon

A passage from “The Complete Guide to Watercolor” by Edgar J. Whitney. It reads:

“THE VIRTUES OF WATERCOLOR:
Watercolor has three glories or virtues: (1) Faster rhythms—one stroke three-feet long if you wish. (2) Lovelier precipitations, the truth involved here being that substances obeying their own laws do beautiful things. Look at tide marks on a beach, or auto tire marks in snow. Coil two ropes and cast one on the floor, then you arrange the other. A glance at them proves my contention. Look at a Rorschach ink blot. This is the truth Jackson Pollock added nothing to. He poured enamel or paint on the floor and framed the area that pleased him most. Watercolor is trying to help you every stroke you make. (3) Its white paper showing through a transparent wash is the closest approximation to light in all the media, and light is the loveliest thing that exists. All of these virtues have to do with the nature of watercolor, which is that it is wet.”

I got this book a while ago and haven’t ever fully explored it. But it is amazing.

I feel like every time I open it, I discover another weird little insight or aphorism.

Maybe I’ll put a few of these in a thread. They are really unexpected, especially out of context.

Hey there Mastodonians, I'd like to pick your brains about this piece I'm working on at the moment.

I'm at the stage where I'm letting it sit for a bit to see where and how I can improve on it.

Update: thank you for all your input and kind words, you can see the final piece here: mastodon.art/@tso/111776567581

Digital illustration.

A skinny young boy with a grey mask for a face and yellow eyes looking downwards, out of his head various cacti are growing through a translucent umbrella that seems to be fixed on his head also.

He wears a bright yellow raincoat with blue buttons and he is holding an old, shabby, white and blue rowing boat cradled in his arms.

He is standing to his ankles in some kind of lake and is reflected in it.

The background is a foggy, blue night scene with some kind of weird ladders growing into the sky, which is full of stars.

Ya’ll, it turns out natural woodsy landscapes are NOT the best thing for practicing your beginner watercolors

I am now looking at a couple sketchbook pages with a lot of wet green and not much shape or perspective 😬
