#LesezeichenSalbke

#ThrowbackThursday #TBT 4 years ago today we attended a small arts festival in the #Salbke neighbourhood of #Magdeburg. You might remember the little Peng graffiti I shared a while back, where I mentioned some details about this structure: #LesezeichenSalbke ("Salbke Bookmark"). Built in 2009, it served as an open-air library and book-crossing spot (until that was discontinued due to vandalism), a venue for small events, and a noise barrier for locals. It even won awards, including the #EuropeanPrizeForUrbanPublicSpace! As it turns out, the small concert at Lesezeichen Salbke that I mentioned in my old post was happening on October 30, 2021 and I took a photo! 😂

A vibrant nighttime scene featuring a group of people gathered in front of a distinctive, cube-shaped structure made of lattice-like blocks. The structure is illuminated with blue and green lights, creating a striking visual effect. Inside the structure, a small stage is visible, with performers silhouetted against a backdrop of colourful, dynamic lighting. The audience stands on steps and the pavement, watching the performance. In the background, the street is softly lit, with buildings and a hint of urban life, adding to the lively and artistic atmosphere of the event.

A mini #Peng in #Magdeburg #Salbke 🔍

This structure is the #LesezeichenSalbke, or "bookmark" ("Salbke" is the name of the neighbourhood). It was built in 2009 as an open air library (and bookcrossing spot), a venue for small events, and a noise barrier for the locals. It even won some awards (like the #EuropeanPrizeForUrbanPublicSpace)!

Sadly, it's a popular spot for vandalism too, so since 2015, there are no more books here. What a shame, it is such a beautiful concept! And I feel stupid now, because I learned all of this only an hour ago. 😅 I did see a small concert a few years ago here! But it was already dark and short, so I didn't see much of the Lesezeichen at the time.

When I passed by in May to take photos of #PengMagdeburg, it looked rather sad and run-down, but I should have spent more time to take it in. Well, next time!

The image is a medium-distance, eye-level shot of a building facade with a modern, brutalist style. The front of the structure is a wall made of light-coloured concrete blocks, arranged in a grid with an open, decorative pattern. The blocks have square cut-outs, giving the wall a permeable, almost lace-like appearance. The lower part of the wall is covered in dark graffiti and street art, one of them being a stylized face by artist Peng. There are also several framed panels on the wall, possibly with artwork or information on them. A set of concrete stairs leads up to the structure. To the left, a portion of the building extends into a decorative archway, mirroring the same block pattern. In the background, there are other buildings with colourful facades, including a vibrant purple and a dark grey one, and green trees. The sky is a bright blue with large, fluffy white clouds. The foreground shows a paved area with tram tracks running along the street. The image is a medium-distance shot of a contemporary, open-air structure. The main part of the structure features a large stage or platform with wooden steps leading up to it. The back wall of the stage is made of vertical wooden planks, heavily covered with graffiti, posters, and stickers. The left side of the building is made of the same decorative concrete blocks with square cut-outs as seen in a previous image, forming a large overhang. The ground in front of the stage is a mix of patchy grass and a pathway made of grooved wooden planks. In the background, there are other buildings with a mix of red and white facades. The sky is a bright blue with large, fluffy white clouds. The entire scene has a slightly unkempt, urban feel, suggesting it is a well-used public space.
