Why does your hero need to do what they're doing right now? Why can't they wait?
Every story needs a time limit (homework is due, bestie's birthday is next week, there's a literal timer on the cage about to release the wild zobeasts of Planet Rawr) so the hero needs to act now.
Every book (for YA and older) needs a Moment of Despair. A moment when the hero loses everything. Their friends are gone. The music ends. For this moment, the villain has triumphed and the hero has been destroyed.
