I've realized that I need to voice this, because the people directly involved aren't really publicizing it. #LibriVox - the public domain #audiobook site - has been inundated with scrapers and bots for several days now.
Apologies for the language, but #fuckai if this is what it's doing now. Anyone who can provide technical help with stemming the flood should reach out to their (small #volunteer ) team. This site is valuable to our culture. Don't let it be destroyed.
I finished Anne of Green Gables recently. I enjoyed it! I was reading other books at the same time, so it took me a while to finish it, but every time I listened to a chapter I liked it. It's funny and touching. I found that listening to a few of Anne's misadventures was a great way to wind down during anxious times. It was like spending time with a "kindred spirit" to borrow one of Anne's favorite phrases.
@neil I recently listened to a couple of H Beam Piper's works on #Librivox which might fit the bill.
I started with The Cosmic Computer, followed by The 4 Day Planet

@MichaelWhelan woah! Didn't expect to encounter the artist who did the cover of a book a recently read based on the title alone here on Mastadon!
Now I'm kinda mad that the recording I listened to on #LibriVox used a much less compelling cover art than yours
There is so much good available in the public domain. I just found LibriVox, a volunteer-run audiobook project for public domain books. The quality is okay and depends on the volunteer's skills and equipment, but it's free even without making an account.
I use it on my phone and it works well with Android Auto. #audiobooks #reading #literature #AndroidAuto #librivox
"To make all books in the public domain available, narrated by real people and distributed for free, in audio format on the internet,” #LibriVox brings thousands of texts to modern audiences in audio form" - https://blog.archive.org/2025/03/10/public-domain-spotlight-librivox/ it's amazing, do give it a whirl #PD
Librivox.org has free public domain audio books done by volunteers.
It's pretty awesome.
@trummerschlunk @falktx @x42 @PrototypeFund This isn't just a great tool for podcasters. Audiobook creators, like the people at #librivox who usually don't have a lot of skills and knowledge about audio editing and mixing could benefit immensely from this. As well as reels and all sorts of content creators. A really great tool indeed!

#LibriVox audio book of Michael Faraday's lectures on the chemical history of a candle, adapted from his famous Christmas Lectures.
"Taking the everyday burning of a candle as a starting point, Faraday spans the arc from combustion and its products, via the components of water and air (oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon), back to the type of combustion that happens in the human body when we breathe."

@AlexanderVI @HeavenlyPossum I've certainly got more to read! I've been slowly making my way through classic works I've heard about and been interested in via #LibriVox over my new commute. It's been quite interesting exploring new books. Always open to recommendations too!
I was watching _Terry Talks Movies_ on #YouTube last night, and he made a passing comment about some old #MovieSerials, including one called _The Mysterious Doctor Satan_, which drew my interest. But given that the hero in that serial is name the Copperhead, the villain's name is just a coincidence, and has nothing to do with the Paul Ernst novellas in _Weird Tales_.
However, searching on #YouTube further, I found that a channel called _HorrorBabble_ has done readings of five of the eight Doctor Satan #pulp thrillers, with them running about 1h15m. I may listen to one the next time I'm chopping vegetables for slow cooker stew.
#Librivox has also done some Paul Ernst stories, but none of the #DoctorSatan ones. I've already read three of the ones Librivox has, and have the other two in the waiting novelette pack.

This morning I finished War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells on #LibriVox I'm really impressed with the vision for the evolutionary history for the martians and the overall arc of how the invasion progressed and the final ending where it's revealed how doomed the invasion was from the moment they emerged from their craft. Such a cool book!
🔊 New Audiobook!
"Anti-Dictator: The Discours sur la servitude volontaire" by Étienne de La Boétie, translated by Harry Kurz.
This famous essay argues that tyrants only have power because people willingly give it to them. Advocating civil disobedience & nonviolent resistance, La Boétie unpacks why we consent to oppression—and how we can withdraw it.

During my long commutes I've started going through H.G. Wells' work last week via #LibriVox first with The Invisible Man (shocking how differently that might have ended had he been a more decent person to start with) and now The War of the Worlds
I'm struck by how creative and unique H.G. Wells' image for the martians is as well as by how I don't think I've seen an homage to them in any sci-fi media
