This is the event space at Pioneer Works, a converted factory and arts center in Red Hook, Brooklyn, which recently hosted a panel discussion on UFOs, exoplanets, astrobiology, and the search for extraterrestrial life — a fascinating and wide-ranging conversation between scientists Adam Frank, David Kipping, and Janna Levin (I learned a lot!). I took this photo before the panelists took the stage, when the screen was displaying quirky graphics inspired by the retro “little green men” iconography of the past decades.

Something a little different for #Doorsday. Over 2 years ago, I took this photo with my phone while lying down sick with Covid in the spare room. I normally kept the door shut to isolate, but whenever it was open Max would sit in the doorway to check in on me. (He seemed to know to keep his distance!) How I miss my friend.

Standing at the top of a path leading into an office building at night, you can see how the harsh illumination of a streetlight creates intriguing shadows . The sidewalk has a hatched pattern of black shadows on the light gray cement. At the right, an elevated bed of grasses looks like streaks of russet brown. The foot of the parh stops at the building entrance stairs, which are glowing red under an off-screen neon light. The building atrium glass walls show an empty out of focus area lit up in pink.
