Alpine #Linux follows closely upon the release of a new #LTS kernel version: 6.12
Alpine 3.21 has a raft of other updates along with the kernel: updated development tools including .NET 9, and new desktops including KDE Plasma 6.2, LXQt 2.1, and GNOME 47
The version before this one, Alpine 3.20, added #RISCV back in May. Now, it gains another: the quite #MIPS-like Chinese #Loongson

They focus on single threaded performance with SPEC #CPU2017 rate tests running a single copy. There's a small exception for #SMT
#Loongson still can’t compete with older desktop offerings like Core i5-6600K, even if Loongson has improved performance between 3A5000 and 3A6000. Loongson needs to keep up pace of IPC improvements while dramatically increasing clock speeds if they hope to seriously compete with Intel and AMD.

They have purportedly decided to switch gears, utilizing a new strategy deemed tock-tock2-tick. This method adds a second architectural design optimization "pass" before the design is ported to a smaller node. Effectively, this gives Loongson's designers more time to improve their #CPU designs before moving to new process node.

Feel like posting my oddball #Loongson machine where I sometimes question my own sanity for even getting that but not gonna lie its fun and the only way to get your hands on a modern and maybe last ever PC with an #ISA using #MIPS with some #RISCV sprinkled in. CPU is an 3A6000.

People seem confused about #Loongson LoongArch. I meet some people who claim it's 64-bit #MIPS (like Loong64) and others who swear it's #RiscV. Perhaps the binary translation capabilities add to the confusion. Is LoongArch different enough from either to be considered its own thing?

It features a 16C/32Th count and significant IPC improvements from the firm's previous 3C5000 and provide DDR4-3200 support. Loongson also has dual silicon and quad silicon chips in plans, both featuring a respective core count of 32 cores and 64 cores. There will also be a future 8-chiplet design that would pack up to 128 cores.

New #inxi 3.3.35 just went out the door. Who will package it first? Me, since I just sent out the #TinyCore package. I decided if I was going to package inxi for TC, I should make sure to release it as soon as the new inxi was pushed to @Codeberg For those wondering, still liking CB, and not missing #github for even a microsecond. CB is everything I hoped it would be. Squeezed in a nice last set of fixes, repos, packages, distro name filter glitch. And of course the #Loongson CPU/GPU stuff..

I've been gathering data for the Chinese #Loongson #MIPS CPU and GPUs, almost no data on the GPUs for the GPU arch tables (need more product IDs for matches), but found a fairly complete listing of Loongson CPUs on en.wikichip.org/wiki/loongson/ then found a collection of sample cpuinfo output files, which was enough to create a rough first CPU arch support in #pinxi (next #inxi). Just debugged last bits, seems to be working. Chinese built #Deepin (#Debian derived) supports #LoongArch.
