The Dutch National Contact Point (NCP) of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has issued a report concluding that the oil company Pluspetrol violated the rights of indigenous communities and was responsible for environmental contamination during its operations in Block 1AB (now called Block 192) in the #Loreto region between 2000 and 2015.

Indigenous leaders in #Loreto have blocked the Marañón and Tigre rivers in protest against government failure to comply with prior consent laws in relation to oil Block 8. Agreements, which include clean-up of oil spills and provision of local benefits, have been repeatedly broken, leaving communities with no option but to close the major waterways and begin an indefinite strike, the leaders say.

Mercury threat to mother-and-child health in #Loreto #Quecksilber #Bergbau
People are being exposed to levels of mercury way above safety levels, a recent study in Loreto reveals. Communities in Bajo Putumayo are especially affected, with 83% of the population at high risk and women of reproductive age among the most vulnerable. Studies of residents’ hair showed mercury levels as high as 15.67 mgs/kg. The WHO standard is 2.2 mgs/kg.

As we reported last week, Awajún communities in the Manserriche district of Datem del #Marañón province in #Loreto region have been protesting for a month, demanding an effective state response to yet another spill from the northern Peruvian oil pipeline. They also demand a response over improvements to the quality and cultural appropriateness of the education received by their children.

On 19 March yet another oil spill from the northern Peruvian oil pipeline occurred near the Sinchi Roca community in Manseriche province. As usual, the state oil company Petroperú announced that the pipeline had been sabotaged, and that it would implement contingency plans to control the spill and commence environmental remediation.
