Took some photos of me taking photos of the moon. Using the 100-500mm on the chunky monkey S1RII. It's weird shooting with a full-size camera again.

Flipped it around, can see the exposure on the back of the camera. That's a lot of moon.

Here's the final shot. Was about 1/20th of a second exposure.

Sometime around 10am this morning, the moon decided to make a dash across the fjords. I was enjoying a sleep in and had to skip out in my pyjamas to take photos.

The light is getting brighter now, even a week after the solstice. Clear skies make such a difference. It's now 2pm and we're back to darkness in the forest.

Clear skies tonight for NYE. Will have my camera gear in the car to dash out if auroras kick off.

View across the fjord to snowy mountains, pink skies and the moon just gliding across it all. We have another month to go before we see the sun, so the moon will have to suffice for the time being.

Two young novice monks wander the stupa and chorten while on a break from studies

The next treat is a Wall Creeper. These are one of my favie species in the Himalayas. I see them all over the place and often in unexpected locations. But whenever I visit a temple of any sort, I keep an eye out for them. I know there'll be at one that claims a temple for its own.

This fella was hanging around the stupa at Chendibji, which is a favie spot for me to visit on the way between Phobjikha and Trongsa.

This is when a longer lens would really really help, as they are such tiny birds. I've included a huge crop on the second photo so you can see some of the detail in the wings. They flit the wings out to startle bugs, not unlike a wagtail waving its plumage, but more of a sudden flick... and then wait to see if anything panicked!

Tit loking for things to munch on amongst the dried stalks

Focus is peering through the dried vegetation and landing on the tit. Bokeh and a bird.

Here's a special treat for everyone today. Did you even know that this little bird existed? It's a Rufous-vented Tit and they love the higher elevations in Bhutan. They rumble through the lower shrubs in packs, munching on seeds and looking for anything more juicy that might be hiding amongst the foliage.

These guys happened to flitter close enough to me to get that 500mm into action. Had just finished dodging some yaks when they came along. I enjoy these unplanned encounters with nature so much. Such moments are a gift.

Today we got out for a little birding with our driver. He's super into birds now and loves sharing the local species. Saw a bunch of stuff, but in terms of photos, this proud little Hodgson's Redstart stole the day. Just a charmer, and came close enough for the 500mm to get some action.

Eventually the crane pairs had finished brekky in the paddock, and were ready to head off to look for more snacks elsewhere.

New video out for the new L-Mount 100-500mm by Lumix. Loads of birds in this one.

Rolfie popped in today. Was proper hungry, so guess we better go shopping and restock the walnut supplies.

Got a chance to pull out the 100-500mm lens. It's not a macro lens, but still pretty handy for getting in close.

Can't believe how lucky we were to catch such a perfect clear evening at this time of year. This was the absolute last gasp of colour touching the peak. Such stillness and calm.

Still in Bhaktapur with this series. I visit here every year, and pretty much every year I take a photo of Kumari. This time the shoot escalated a little! This old temple had just been renovated and gave us a wonderful glow as morning sun streamed through the lattice work.⁠ I love a little serendipity.

Finally got close enough for a shot of one today.

The joy of the unexpected.

Yesterday was by any measure a totally shit day for me. Except for one brief break in the clouds. Metaphorical and literal.

I stepped outside at twilight to watch another aurora, and over the next hour the cloud cover thinned. And it was a marvellous show. I decided to grab a camera and start a timelapse in case more nordlys arrived... and I got lucky

One of the best auroras I've ever seen.

I've been secretly posting shots from the new Lumix S1RII over the last few months. It's been my default camera in Norway this year.

It's new and it's pretty cool.

It's got more pixels than the S5II. Faster internal data rates (CF Express) than the S5IIx. Better AF than the original S1R or S1H. It's got better high speed video than anything Lumix have made. And a funky twist to the rear screen. Etc etc.

It's very nice.
