#archiving data on BD-R XL #MDisc
Bought the more expensive discs to ensure to preseverve the data for at least the next century. Here is a picture of the media before and after burning it. Of course the disc can‘t be read anymore.

@felsqualle @fuchsiii that's because around 2010s they cheaped out with organic binder (same shit as #LaserDisc used) and decided that's good enough.

  • Consider imaging your stuff and/or using #MDISC recordables...

@felsqualle @fuchsiii yeah, you guys can thank the folks who thought it was a great idea to use the same organic binder as used in the #LaserDisc...

  • If you need optical archives, consider buying #MDISC recordables...

@raccoon what kind of discs?

Another one for the #archive #datahoarder #storage #nas bubble:

What is the ~best DVD-ROM drive to read old and likely degraded media?

The Internet at large seems devoid of any information, it's all AI and linkfarming slop.

Are #MDisc worth it? If yes, what drive, disk manufacturer etc do I want? Are 100GB discs are reliable as 50 and 25 ones?
#HDD have shorter life? #LTO #tape seems less portable?

Retoots and replies *very* much appreciated.

🧵 6/n next time, i won't be double-compressing my #MDISC #BDXL #backup.

I can't use the disc image directly, because in my infinite wisdom, i've compressed the already compressed file system.

Now i get to wait another hour-ish, before i can access my rather old files.

Well, i can try and scrape 'em off the busted NVMe.

copying the backup image off the Blu-ray, onto the NAS, via sshfs

I just learned about bluray m-discs, and now I want to use them for long-term backups. I realise I have no followers, but does anyone have any advice for (Windows) software to write the discs? #MDisc #backup #bluray

Only 120mm doscs, not 80mm discs tho.

I want to see 80mm BD-RWs and 80mm #MDISC|s as well as #credit itCard-CD's and #Businesscard-DVD's...

@Akiko @CliffWade np.

I just wanr to avoid using ODDs and burning.new since - like with 3,5" FDDs - Quality of #Recordables has gone down the drain and there are no #MDISC-#ReWriteables...

Furthermore #DVDRAM doesn't work reliably as bottable media, if at all.

@itzzenxx @eve why not?

I wounder if there are #MDISC #HDDVD-#Rewritables...

Did I ever think I would find myself using optical discs again? Certainly not!

As it turns out, the Blu Ray format (+ M-DISC) are rated to last quite a while! I’ve been in the process of copying my oldest VOD’s onto disc for long-term preservation.

Do you guys do the same?

A slim optical disc drive sits atop my pc, connected by USB to the top USB port. Underneath, the glass side panel exposes parts of the interior of my computer’s configuration, namely: the Noctua NH-U14S CPU cooler, my motherboard (with a display that shows the most recent Q-Code), and my Lian Li SL120 INF case fans. The case fans have RGB tinted blue, illuminating the interior of the case in light.

The Disc Duplicator M-Disc upgrade went well! Everything seems to work on a hardware level.

Next, I have to start installing and testing software:

I have a low-level USB library in Python that I got from AdaFruit that I'll be using to test the robotics codes I have in my notes.

I will have to find the instructions on installing the Lexmark Z600 driver that is supposed to work with this printer (and also understand how it works for disk printing).

And I suppose I will need some kind of python library for accessing the M-Disc burner, reading and writing media, and controlling the open/close of the disk tray from software.

Then I'll have to write the code to do the top-level control of those.

I'll first set these up to run from the command line (or the Python interactive interpreter). Ultimately, I want to be able to control it from a browser, so I can attach the duplicator to a different computer if I want to.

So after I get the low-level stuff working, I plan to create a little Flask web application. And it's a disc burner. Hence, my working project title, "Bunsen".

So, there's still many steps left.

These parts arrived in the mail today, so I now have what I need for the M-Disc disc duplicator project. Planning to get started on that tomorrow!

Have published the first two installments documenting my process on this. I've got the M-Disc writer for the upgrade ordered now. When it gets here, I'll write up the installation, and then it's on to the software testing.
