In case anyone is reading and trying to figure out how to remove Microsoft Edge from a fully updated Windows 11 install:

The guide listed below still works, but only once you downgrade Edge.

You can downgrade using winget. I used UniGetUI, which uses winget on the backend as well as other sources.

The version I tried is
124.0.2478.97. Going too far back gives an error.

After that you need to execute this tool from an elevated command line prompt:

./vivetool /enable /id:44353396

(The program is available here):
https://github.com/thebookisclosed/ViVe/releases

Reboot.

After that just add your country to the list of countries in the European Economic Area and mark them as eligible for uninstall. (See guide below, or the summary)

The file you want to edit is
Windows\System32\IntegratedServicesRegionPolicySet.json.

- You need to give yourself permission to edit the file:
File properties > Security > Advanced > Change (link next to the owner at the top)

- Here, type
Administrators and hit the button on the right of the text field, click Accept.

- Select Administrators from the list and click edit to give yourself write access

- Click accept on all windows to apply changes.

Here's the edited code block:

(...)
  "policies": [
    {
      "$comment": "Edge is uninstallable.",
      "guid": "{1bca278a-5d11-4acf-ad2f-f9ab6d7f93a6}",
      "defaultState": "enabled",
      "conditions": {
        "region": {
          "enabled": ["AT", "BE", "BG", "CH", "CL", "CY", "CZ", "DE", "DK", "EE", "ES", "FI", "FR", "GF", "GP", "GR", "HR", "HU", "IE", "IS", "IT", "LI", "LT", "LU", "LV", "MT", "MQ", "NL", "NO", "PL", "PT", "RE", "RO", "SE", "SI", "SK", "YT"]
        }
      }
    },
(...)
In the example above, I flipped disabled to enabled and snuck Chile (CL) onto the list of eligible countries.

Your country code is set at install time.

You can find it by opening regedit (press Win+R and type regedit) and going to the key
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\International\Geo\Name. That's the country you're supposed to add to the json file on the main post.

You might need to restart. Now you can uninstall Edge from the settings. Enjoy, until Microsoft fixes it anyway!

@jalefkowit I just found out about this a few days ago that it's been available for months!

I've been waiting for this since #Opera introduced Tabs to the Browser world.

Opera then introduced Tabs to any edge of the window. Opera split into #Vivaldi, and now Vivaldi supports awesome tab groups and stacks.

#MSEdge also picked up Vertical tabs for quite a few years now too.

#FIrefox has resolutely resisted having first-party Vertical Tabs all this time. Amazingly ridiculous.

Whenever I run #jetbrains #rider it crashes and I get logged out of #ubuntu
I am guessing this is related to the issue where #vscode keeps crashing and that in turn is related to #chromium based browsers like #msedge crashing every 5 minutes. I fear this laptop may have its best days behind it

#Microsoft is quite something: I've already switched the search engine in the #Edge browser to google. And I deactivated their Bing-"home" tab that shows up when opening.

... And yet, with the latest update every empty tab has a search bar in there with - you guessed it: Bing!
And no way to change it or turn it off.

They are bizarrely brazen in their ways of force-feeding users their crap.

Why I Switched to Firefox and Never Looked Back

Despite their questionable for-profit business decisions, I still prefer Firefox. This is someone else coming to the same conclusion.

For me, Firefox had two irreplaceable features:

  • Effective ad-blocking extensions
  • Multi-container browsing

If you haven't used multi-containers, it started with their Facebook container. It isolated Facebook and kept it from seeing all your other cookies and website info. They made it an extension so you can have as many as you want and put whatever sites you decide into them.
Edge has Profiles which are similar but much more complicated and harder to keep separate within a single session.
That's a Firefox killer feature to me.

That and not crippling ad-blockers.

Saviez-vous que sur une page web, on peut donner comme couleur "Chuck Norris" et que ça marche ?

Eh non, ce n'est pas une blague !
