The GLC’s roads programme of the 60s & early 70s certainly kept the Graphic Design Division of the Council’s Supplies Department busy. Here are some covers of related brochures: the Eurostile typeface for the East Cross Route & italicised Helvetica (or similar) for Westway are particularly appealing. #GLC #Municipal #Roads

The Bow flyover: commissioned by the LCC, delivered by the GLC. It has become an integral part of the East Cross Route (which travels beneath), but predates it - its primary purpose was to alleviate congestion caused by the limitations of the old Bow Bridge which carried the A11 over the River Lea. #LCC #GLC #Municipal

The front cover of the brochure is a black and white photo of a model of the proposed Bow Flyover. The title is "Bow Bridge", printed in yellow on the black background of the sky in the photo. Dear Mr Henley,
Many thanks for your letter of 18 March, which I received in my office on the 29.
I appreciate you taking the time and trouble to write to me in such terms and for your kind comments on my appearance on "Question Time".
I am only too pleased to send you a photograph - I hope it is not for a dart board!
Yours sincerely,

The London County Council’s Strand Underpass, opened in 1964 and created through the conversion of part of the former Kingsway tram tunnel. The work, undertaken by John Mowlem & Co., cost just over £1 million. Here is an LCC brochure marking its completion. #LCC #Municipal

The cover is a black and white photo of cars driving through the brightly lit tunnel. The title is “LCC Strand Underpass” which is written across an orange banner.
