I work for Meta and I see a lot of stupid things. But the dumbest thing this month, has come from the Fediverse.

A mutual aid scam, or sympathetic scam, is an individual who is claiming a hardship that does not exist, and is playing on people's emotions to take advantage of them.
For example, a scammer claiming they need money for their mother's funeral, and to care for their aging father, only to later claim a few days later, to need money to feed their mother (who previously they claimed had died).
Or claims they need money to avoid being evicted from their apartment, because their landlord is tired of waiting for the rent. Only later making up another story about how they need money to pay taxed on their house and mortgage.
What makes Mutual Aid Scammers, also known as Sympathy Scammers, so awful is they make it really hard for people who actually need help.

Hi! It's your favorite transsexual history dork bike courier! I'm getting ready to move again, and due to a series of unexpected events I find myself lacking a lot of funds. I didn't expect I would be moving again this soon (first week of July!) and it's come at a time where I am very low on resources.
