Our first keynote piece, "Playing with the Past: Cultural Integrity in Narrative Gaming", is by game developer Stevan Anastasoff as he talks about adapting the Mabinogion for modern gaming and the problems of a one-size-fits-all approach to how we interpret medieval narratives in gamified ways:

"When first I came hither, the wide valley you see was a wooded glen. And a race of men came and rooted it up. And there grew a second wood, and this wood is the third. My wings, are they not withered stumps? Yet all this time, even until today, I have never heard of the man for whom you inquire."

The Welsh hero King Pwyll trapped his enemy, the fairy Gwawl, in a magic bag. Each of Pwyll's men asked what was in it; when Pwyll said "a badger," the man kicked the bag. Gwawl was freed only when he swore to leave Pwyll alone forever. Thus the game "Badger in the Bag" was invented.

During the day, owls are often attacked by other birds. According to Welsh myth, this is because the wizard Gwydion transformed the woman Blodeuwedd into an owl after she tried to murder Gwydion's ward Lleu. Part of her curse was that all other birds would hate her.

In Welsh legends, the fastest of King Arthur's knights were the brothers Henwas and Henbedestyr. Both were quicker than any horse. Their brother Sgilti Light-Foot's footsteps were so light, branches didn't break under him. Even grass didn't bend under his feet.

Every May 1 until Judgement Day, the Welsh hero Gwythyr battles Gwyn ap Nudd (king of the dead) for Creiddylad (Gwythyr's kidnapped fiancΓ©e). As May 1 is the first day of the Celtic summer, many scholars interpret this as a conflict between summer and winter.

Owain ap Urien was a 6th-century Brythonic Celtic king who became mythologized as one of King Arthur's champions. In French Arthurian legends, Owain is the son of Morgan le Fey. However, in Welsh legends, he is the son of Modron ("Mother," a fairy mother goddess).

In Welsh myths, the giant British king Bran the Blessed was killed in Ireland, and his huge head was carried home. Back in Britain, the head was buried where the Tower of London now stands. As long as the head is there, Britain can't be invaded, but some say King Arthur dug it up.

The most potent magic of the great Welsh magician Gwydion was turning plants into people. He worked with his uncle Math to transform a bunch of flowers into a wife for his ward Lleu Llaw Gyffes, and later turned a grove of trees into an army to fight an invading fairy host.

The Welsh hero Pryderi was the son of Pwyll, king of Dyfed, and the fairy princess Rhiannon. He was stolen away from his parents as a baby by a mysterious clawed monster, and raised by another family. Due to his fairy heritage, Pryderi grew to adulthood at superhuman speed.

I've taken to doing lots more of studies for all my jobs, and I find I actually save time in the long run! So... some deer and a couple messy dogs.
Do you do lots of studies, or none at all? I'm curious.

Most fairies in Welsh myths wear white clothes inlaid with gold. However, the fairy king Arawn is described as wearing grey instead. Some scholars theorize this links him to death and the Underworld, others theorize this is just because Arawn is currently hunting, and so is in his hunting clothes.

In Welsh myths, pigs originally came from the Otherworld, a gift from the fairy king Arawn. The Welsh point to all the many different kinds of marvelous food one can turn pigs into (bacon, sausages, pork chops, etc.) as proof that pigs are magical creatures.

Ep 170: The days of no shadow (...and then a deer barked)

A gently sloping field drops down to a thick wooded hedge. Behind it, unseen in the photograph, lies the canal. In the middle ground some ash, bare of leaf, are clustered. A scattering of sheep graze beneath them. A sheep-trod path leads from the foreground down the hill. Taken on one of the days with no shadow.

The most sadistic villain in Welsh mythology was the British prince Efnysien. When he heard his sister was marrying the Irish king, Efnysien was so consumed by jealous rage that he mutilated all of the Irish king's horses, cutting off their tails, ears, and eyelids.
