Here’s what I assume is an Indian runner / mallard hybrid duck. I made friends with this fellow at a fair in Connecticut last year. I’d like to someday have one of these cuties at #MacJohnsonFarm.

We were unable to find a referral, despite the fedi's best efforts to help. But no worries. We recently drove past a small homestead with a sign that they raise chicks. I just ordered one each of: California White, Cinnamon Queen, Black Sexlink.
It's never too early to start considering names... The new chicks in the flock will be joining: Reptar, Karen, Queen Bee...
I wonder if there is a niche on YouTube for a channel that follows a family of corporate lackeys by day / naturalists by night who dream of dumping the 'burbs to live on acreage in BFE doing permaculture, raising veggies, animals and trying to be wholesome? It’s peak #blackwalnut processing season here in #Missouri. The first of what I hope will be many for #macjohnsonfarm.
This year I’m hulling with a pressure washer. Next year I’ll have a machine and will finish with the washer.
It took me 40 minutes to hull one five-gallon bucket worth. That’s 213 nuts. I have eight 27-gallon totes more to go 😱
Every day I feed our chickens, give them scraps, pet their booties, make sure they have plenty of water. Even let them free range the back yard now and then.
Yet they overwhelmingly prefer @Jillianmarisa. To the point that it’s outright offensive.
She comes in the back yard and they rush up to her, love on her and follow her around. They typically run way from me.
Jerks! But I still love ‘em.
Garlic time! We’re a little late this year and unfortunately we got to the scapes late as well. Bulb size really suffered on the hard necks ☹️.
Past few years we have grown three types. Two soft neck varieties Inchelium Red and Kay's Backyard. Plus one hardneck variety called Music.
This year the Inchelium Red far outperformed the others. Kay‘s did OK and the music was a dud. Mostly our fault.

Yesterday we went on another #Aplaca experience. This was our fourth farm visited in just a few months. Slowly learning as much as we can so we’re well-positioned for when we are finally able to get the real #MacJohnsonFarm off the ground.
We hope that in the next 5ish years we will be on some land, far away from the noise, pollution and traffic of the ‘burbs. Tonight @Jillianmarisa and I ran the numbers and put together a business plan around nuts and trees.
