Post Office protest update!

It went well. :) Some of us stood inside and some stood outside gathering signatures for the petition, which currently has over 700.

The managers from Cardiff turned up late but they turned up, and while we protested there was a meeting with 3 protestors plus the managers and some Spar and Post Office staff.

I wasn't in the meeting and haven't seen notes yet, but rumour has it the managers see that they've been hasty and they're pausing the refurbishment plans and they're going to do some consultation.

The Post Office in our mid Wales town lives inside a Spar owned and run by a company.

They've just admitted that in January they are downsizing our Post Office, reducing staff and services dramatically.

A manager from the company that owns the Spar is visiting it tomorrow, so we're staging a protest of support for the Post Office while they're there, and handing over a petition of over 500 signatures. (There's only about 1,000 people living in the town.)

The protest might not even work, because Royal Mail isn't publicly owned anymore - it's 100% controlled by companies who can do whatever they want. But I'm furious and I'm going anyway.

If you live in/near #Machynlleth, come along - the manager's arriving around 9:30am so we're turning up from 9am.

Home-made protest sign. Brown cardboard with a white rectangle where an address label would go. A giant stamp in the top right corner, with the King's face modified with a black Sharpie to look angry. Text on sign: My home > Post Office passport and ID services > Home again. Now: On foot, 30 mins maximum. From Jan 2026: by train and wheelchair, 3 hours minimum.

The combination of a hot summer and a humid-but-not-drowning-like-rats #autumn in #Wales this year has resulted in some gorgeous #fungi worlds. No idea what species are growing here other than they're doing it in gay abandon.

I also tried to photograph a spider's web recently - this was taken near Machynlleth in Wales, early evening last month. Just taken on my phone. #Machynlleth #wales #CentreForAlternativeTechnology

Machynlleth town clock chimes remain, despite hotel owner's request to silence at night

A proposal to silence the historic town clock of Machynlleth, Powys, between midnight and 07:00 BST has been rejected by the town council. The clock, which has been a key part of the town’s character for 150 years, was recently restored at a cost of £55,000. Huw Morgan, co-owner of the Wynnstay Hote... [More info]
