Free to a good home: An Apple AudioVision 14 Display. It worked fine when I got rid of my 7100 years ago, but now there's a piece cracked off the base and the cable seems to have gotten tugged. 🤦‍♂️ The stress relief grommet isn't seated in the hole in the case, as shown in the last photo. Manufactured in May 1994. :apple_inc:

It’s back to (almost) full health. I pinched the floppy drive cable to the case, which shorted something out and prevented it from booting.

With that cable replaced, all drives work and everything runs as expected. Now I just need to replace the floppy drive plate because the hooks that hold it in place broke.

Any #Macintosh experts in the #retrocompuing house?

Absolutely about to lose it, but am somehow going to write this absent any swears.

None of the following can apparently be made to work using resources available today unless you want to go digging in the brains of the Terminal, using commands—by the way—that no longer work on Apple Silicon because all of the path references have changed:

* Built-in Mac OS File Sharing
* AppleTalk or AFP (including Netatalk)
* SMB
* Even FTP (including via Homebrew options, FileZilla Server, etc.)

I have tried them all. Both Perplexity and ChatGPT have insisted that all of the above can be made to work, then finally admit after lengthy sessions they do not and that they were relying on old information. When confronted with the fact that I provided them with all of the specific details they needed to give accurate responses in my very first query, the “AI” has the gall to apologize but makes it clear that it has not learned anything from the interaction.

For more than three decades, Apple's image has been grounded in “it just works." Well, the simplest thing possible in computer networking—being able to access and edit the same plain text file from two different machines—does not work, and there is no way for an average technophile to make it work.

It's absolutely preposterous, disgusting, and inexcusable.

Anyone have a lead on a straightforward resource on networking a Tahoe Mac with my old OS 9.2 PM G4?

I’ve tried setting up both an FTP server and Netatalk on the modern Mac using directions provided by AI and both failed miserably.

There must be a quality video or web page with detailed, failproof step-by-step instructions, but I can’t find one.

Successfully re-capped a Macintosh LC II power supply (Astec variety) and having already done the motherboard I am now certain that the computer, and its hard drive, both work. Power on, the hard drive chatters, the video signal… ah.

Unfortunately the video signal it puts out, converted using an NEC Apple to VGA adapter, isn’t accepted by my LCD monitor which reports “Not Supported”.

So I have now to decide between trying to find a flat screen with VGA that supports older Apple display modes, or shelling out on a very expensive rescaler to turn the signal into HDMI which right now would cost around £500 - which isn’t going to happen any time soon (and ideally not at all).

The circuit board from a compact switch mode power supply from Astec on a green cutting board. A selection of old, removed capacitors are in front while the power supply sports new Nichicon capacitors.

With the advent of Apple's M chips, the Hackintosh days are numbered, so had to jump ship. Migrated to one of these today and combined with a Beelink dock, it's an impressive set up that's tiny and fast! Glass sucks and the new OSX UI overall is a step backwards but hey...🤷‍♂️ The Hackintosh though gets converted to a decently powerful Bazzite Steam machine. Win win!
