Sunny but #hazy as #WildfireSmoke returns to #Maine Sunday
An #AirQuality Alert is in place for Sunday.
Emily Pike, August 2, 2025
"Sunday morning lows in the 50s and 60s, with highs in the 70s to 80s. Skies will be mostly sunny, but Canadian wildfire smoke will bring a thick haze for the higher elevations. An Air Quality Alert is in effect Sunday.
"An #AirQualityAlert is in effect from 1 AM to 11 PM on Sunday, August 3, 2025, for parts of #Maine and #NewHampshire due to expected high levels of #ParticlePollution.
"The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has issued the alert for the Western and Eastern Interior regions of the state, including areas in #Franklin, #Somerset, #York, Cumberland, #Androscoggin, and #Kennebec counties. The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services has issued a similar alert for #Coos, #Grafton, and #Carroll counties.
"Air quality is expected to reach levels that are considered 'Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups' due to a plume of smoke moving in from Canada.
"Those most at risk include children, older adults, people with respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, or emphysema, and anyone who is physically active outdoors. Even healthy individuals may experience mild symptoms and should consider limiting strenuous or prolonged outdoor activity during this time.
"High pressure is keeping things dry and sunny, which may allow the smoke to linger into next week, thickening into Monday.
"Looking Ahead: Maine is off to a dry start this August. Without significant rainfall soon, #drought conditions could develop, potentially affecting #crops and increasing #FireRisk.
"The 8-day forecast shows only a few chances for showers and slightly below-average temperatures, mainly in the 70s to 80s."

NWS predicts "areas of smoke before 11 am; widespread haze after 11." In reality, haze is already visible on Casco Bay before 8. And when I fired up my cheap Ikea PM2.5 sensor outside, it went straight to the red zone.

Though the Maine DEP expects a large amount of smoke to move out on Wednesday, the smoke will not entirely clear out of Maine until Thursday.

We got some much-needed rain here in #SouthernMaine today. And luckily, there was time in between showers for the ground to soak it up. I went outside a couple of hours after a soaker, and the ground was completely dry again -- I kid you not!
#Maine #CoolingCenters: Find a spot near you

AUGUSTA, Maine — "Summer has arrived in Maine, bringing rising temperatures and longer days. But when the heat becomes dangerous or oppressive, community cooling centers help support those who need an escape from the heat and humidity.
"The centers are often located in public spaces, such as recreation centers or libraries. They typically open for short-term purposes.
"While the primary purpose is to save lives by getting people out of potentially dangerous heat conditions, cooling centers may also provide charging stations, showers, or food.
"The latest listings for cooling centers are on the Maine Emergency Management Agency's [#MEMA] website. We've included a roundup here as well as additional resources to help you stay safe this summer when temperatures rise.

What are the risks?
"According to the Maine Emergency Management Agency, heat-related illnesses in the state more often occur when temperatures reach the mid-80s or higher.
“Heat-related illnesses, like heat exhaustion or heat stroke, happen when the body is not able to properly cool itself,” according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “While the body normally cools itself by sweating, during extreme heat, this might not be enough. In these cases, a person's body temperature rises faster "

Right now, the wind coming from the mountains is nice and cool. #MountWashingtonObservatory is reporting temps of 47°F (8.33°C) with 100mph winds and gusts of 120mph (not quite that windy here -- gusts of about 20-25mph). I'm so glad I got that window replaced last year. Now there's a nice cross-breeze, and the upstairs is actually cooler than the downstairs today. A nice respite before the heat returns...

I'm hoping it doesn't get that hot inland. The coast is predicted to be a little bit cooler, but close to breaking the all-time record!

I went outside to bring some rain-soaked container plants indoors. Instead of the scent of ozone that one usually smells after a thunderstorm, the air smelled like a campfire that had been doused by fire. Not good.

#Maine #ClimateSummary – May 2025
Source: Maine Department of Agriculture email
"In 2024, Maine and 16 other states had the warmest annual temperatures on record, with the average temperature for the year (January – December 2024) being 4.9°F higher than normal. Northern Maine is experiencing more notable warming compared to Southern and Central Maine. In Caribou and Millinocket, 2024 was the warmest year since records began in 1939 and 1903 respectively. It was the second warmest year for Bangor with the warmest year occurring in 2010.
"Maine’s frost season (November 2024 – March 2025) was warmer and milder than normal with temperatures averaging 24.9°F, roughly 3.9°F above the 1901 – 2000 climate baseline. On average, there was less snowfall statewide during the 2024 – 2025 winter season. Areas in the Midcoast and Washington County received significantly less snowfall – up to 45 inches less than normal in some areas.
"In the last 12 months (May 2024 – April 2025), the state average precipitation was approximately 43 inches, which is about normal. However, areas of northern Somerset County, and Midcoast and Downeast towns have experienced 25 – 50% less than normal precipitation. Maine had very dry conditions beginning in late September, with the entire state categorized as abnormally dry or moderate drought conditions lasting until December. In late April 2025, many wildfires appeared across the state, aided by strong winds and dry conditions. Drought conditions are not expected to continue through May."

Senator #AngusKing fumes at #ClimateChange being nixed from annual threat assessment
Chris D’Angelo for The Maine Monitor April 8, 2025
"#Maine has been described as a 'climate haven,' [the same for #Vermont] a place expected to remain relatively sheltered from the most extreme and dangerous impacts of global climate change. But the #PineTreeState is far from immune.
"Fossil fuel-driven climate change is intensifying #HeatWaves, #flooding and other #ExtremeWeather events. Waters in the #GulfOfMaine are warming faster than nearly every other swath of ocean on the planet, threatening the future of the state’s signature #lobster industry and other #fisheries.
"Sea levels here are forecast to rise approximately 4 feet by the end of the century, forcing coastal communities, shipyards and military installations to prepare and adapt.
" 'This is a guaranteed threat,' said #AmyEshoo, director of #MaineClimateActionNow. 'It’s not one we can negotiate with. It’s not one that we can put #tariffs on. It’s not one we can go to the table with. We unleashed it. It’s here. We’re feeling its effects. Maine is definitely feeling them.' "
