🐘🦥🐪 Happy #MammothMonday - A new mammoth lineage that diverged from other North American species approximately 416,000 years ago was revealed in the journal Science. The specimens were discovered during airport construction near Mexico City.

Researchers were able to extract DNA from more than 80 mammoths, uncovering the new lineage (Clade 1G), indicating a split from their North American cousins between 416,000 and 307,000 years ago.

🐘 #MammothMonday 🐂🦥🐴🐪🐟🍃 These wonderful mammoth tusks are on display at the Vernal Utah Natural History Museum. They were discovered while digging a well in Craig, Colorado, in 1961 and recovered by paleontologist Ernest Untermann. The tusks belong to a Columbian mammoth and were found under 15 feet of gravel.

#DYK that woolly mammoths weren't the only type of mammoth that lived in the Yukon during the last Ice Age? We also have evidence of the much older steppe mammoth.

This steppe mammoth tooth was found on the Traditional Territory of the Vuntut Gwitchin in 1981. It represents the first species of mammoth to cross Beringia and live in North America about 1 million years ago. These primitive mammoths later evolved into the woolly mammoth and the Columbian mammoth.
