The Cunning and the Cost

This short passage, written in a restrained, almost documentary prose, begins like a naturalist's field notes. We are told of the cunning and caution of the Ussuri panther—an intelligent beast, attempting to outwit the humans who track it. The writing builds a sense of respect for the animal, detailing its clever strategy of hiding on a bough opposite its tracks, a creature perfectly in tune with its environment.

But the tone shifts sharply and brutally in the final three sentences. The narrative of a living, thinking creature is severed by the cold, detached line: "When we skinned the panther..." In that moment, a beautiful nature sketch transforms into a quiet tragedy about the collision of two worlds. The story is not just about a hunt; it's about the abrupt and final cost that the wilderness pays when it encounters man.

A powerful reminder that behind every trophy lies a story of intelligence and a lost fight.

The ocean took its splish splash takin a bath a little too far and it turned into a seaweed food fight 😅 🌽kneeeee🤪

From January or February 2023 I believe when we had a massive winter storm that wrecked the seacoast. You can’t tell from this photo, of course, but there are still areas repairing damage to this day!

Man kills wildlife. Aren't Survivor-type shows predicated on things happening the other way around?

Can I just tell you that I loved Bill Watterson's Calvin & Hobbes.

Alt Text for Image: Calvin catches a butterfly, and his tiger, Hobbes, tells him, "If people could put rainbows in zoos, they'd do it." Upon reflection, Calvin releases the butterfly.

Morning Mastodon,

One from the weekend, the river Trent flowing past the towering cooling towers of a coal fired power station fairly close to where I live.

And they say that wind turbines and solar farms are an eyesore.

The bottom half of the image has a river, showing the far bank and a line of trees beyond, on the river two swans are simming toward the viewer leaving a wake behind them. The top half of the image shows eight power station cooling towers with steam pouring from them. Towering above the tree line the plumes rise skyward.

I thought this fella was flirting with me, but I obviously misread the situation.

I stand corrected.

I am not ashamed to admit that I suffer from #EreptileDysfunction.

3.14 out of 10 people experience ereptile dysfunction when handling a lizard.

Nature vs wall on the Kelvin Walkway in the west end of Glasgow. Looks like nature is winning, just very, very slowly!
