Agape – Nicholas Britell

This past drum corps season (2024, for those of you reading this further in the future), two groups performed the Nicholas Britell composition “Agape” in their shows. The song, originally written for the film If Beale Street Could Talk, is very haunting while uplifting, and its title’s meaning dates back to ancient Greece:

Agape (/ɑːˈɡɑːpeɪ, ˈɑːɡəˌpeɪ, ˈæɡə-/;[1] from Ancient Greek ἀγάπη (agápē)) is “the highest form of love, charity” and “the love of God for [human beings] and of [human beings] for God”. 1

While I loved how the Bluecoats and the Mandarins used Agape in their productions, I had not listened to the original composition until today. It stilled my mind as I could do nothing but listen to it. I hope it does the same for you.

Drum corps YouTube is just dropping gifts for me left and right so far this week. Yesterday, I found a video of 2023 Carolina Crown’s show filmed by Vic Firth. Today, the Mandarins come out of nowhere and drop their full 2022 program, The Otherside. This show features an incredible vocalist in the second half as well as that dark Mandarins we’ve come to love over the past few years. Enjoy!
