Electronic music pioneer Dave Ball, one half of groundbreaking electronic music duo Soft Cell and successful acid house act The Grid, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his London home on Wednesday 22nd October. He was 66. Singer Marc Almond, Dave's musical collaborator of 46 years and Soft Cell bandmate, leads the tributes, describing Dave as a "wonderfully brilliant musical genius". What turns out to be Dave’s final appearance with the band came only weeks ago at the Rewind Festival in Henley-on-Thames, where Soft Cell headlined in front of over 20,000 fans.

Eine der schillernsten Personen der frühen 80er war Marc Almond, der von 1979 bis 1984 zusammen mit dem Instrumentalisten David Ball das Synth-Pop-Duo Soft Cell bildete. Hits von „Bedsitter“, „Sex Dwarf“ und natürlich ihr Nummer-Eins-Hit „Tainted Love“ füllen bis heute die Tanzflächen auf Gothic- und 80er-Parties. Nach dem Ende von Soft Cell startete Marc Almond eine Solo-Karriere, die jedoch bei weitem nicht an die Soft-Cell-Zeit anküpfen konnte. Bis 1988 sein viertes Solo-Album erschien: „The Stars We Are“ mit den Singles „Tear Run Rings“, „Bitter Sweet“, „Something’s Gotten Hold of My Heart“ und „Only The Moment“. Mit „Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart“ schaffte Almond es in fünf europäischen Ländern wieder auf Platz 1 der Charts.
„Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart“ ist wie „Tainted Love“ eine Coverversion eines Hits aus den Sechzigern. Auf der Single singt Almond das Lied gemeinsam mit dem Originalinterpreten Gene Pitney. Diese Version wurde auch für spätere LP-Veröffentlichungen und die CD-Version übernommen.
Auf dem Album ist noch ein weiteres Duett, „Your Kisses Burn“, dabei handelt es sich um die letzte Studio-Aufnahme der deutschen Sängerin Nico, die am 18.07.1988 verstarb, noch bevor das Album erschien. „Your Kisses Burn“ ist das düsterste Stück in einer Reihe von ansonsten eher poppigen Songs. Die Sängerin war zu der Zeit auf Methadon und hatte gesundheitliche Probleme. Es gelang trotzdem aus den eingesungenen Takes ein wunderschönes Vermächtnis zu formen.
Wie schon erwähnt dominiert der Pop auf dem Album, Almonds bekannt theatralischer Gesangsstil und seine emotionalen, poetischen Texte machen es zu etwas Besonderem. So ganz hat Almond dem Synth-Pop nicht abgeschworen, sondern ihn vielmehr mit unterschiedlichen Stilen erweitert und so etwas ganz Eigenes geschaffen.
