Day 8 #SciArtSeptember prompt niche. Can we talk about the cutest nesting strategy going? The Eastern Snail Shell Mason Bee (Osmia conjuncta) is a small North American blue bee which makes nests in suitable empty snail shells! In my linocut I show this adorable little pollinator with a Cepaea shell. Each print is 8” by 8” on delicate Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper.

Georgia mason bee (Osmia georgica) exiting her nesting tunnel after depositing a load of pollen. I don't think I've ever seen one on any of the flowers in my yard but they are supposed to be generalists. That said, it's reported (by Paula Sharp & Ross Eatman) that they adore fleabane, positioning their head in the center of the flower and spinning around. #MasonBee #InsectHotel #BeeHotel #osmia #bee #bees #insect

Mason Bees are one of our most important pollinators, particularly for fruit trees like apples that are in blossom in early April.
I've had several simple bee 'hotels' on my shed for a few years.
My simple bee hotel design uses a 15cm length of an old fence post with nine 7 or 8 mm holes. The holes are about 12cm deep i.e. they don't go right through. #MasonBee #allotment

Jeszcze ciekawostka z dzisiejszego czyszczenia siedlisk murarek - puste siedlisko na 700 gniazd waży 1,4 kg, a takie, które jest prawie całe zajęte? 4kg 🤯 Więc te drobne pszczółki zgromadziły ok 2,6 kg materiału - głównie gliny i piasku, część to oczywiście pyłek. Same kokony z nowym pokoleniem murarek są z tego wszystkiego najlżejsze 😅
