When you boost it shares it to your feed and all your followers. Without an algorithm running, boost are what makes content spread and sorta “go viral”. A boost is pretty similar to a retweet in Twitter or share in fb.
The culture on mastodon is to be more generous with boosts, to help posts you like get to more folk.
Boost other new folks especially, help people find their sport.
Make a post and tag it with a big popular tag, and you’ll find that the broader mastodon community is much more able to discover, find and will likley even comment on ur post.

In short, it grabs replies from remote servers when Mastodon fails to pick that up.
I don't quite yet understand if that means all servers, or just the federated ones, but I have seen a couple of instances where I didn't see what someone was replying to, or a profile showed up as empty until I opened it as a direct link on that server.

if you ever *don't* want your post 10 comments down in a silly thread to go global, you can turn that off with the quiet public option
everyone can still see your post, but they have to dive into the thread it's in to find it, they won't see it pop up in their feed

#MastodonTips add hashtags to the end of your post and have more folks discover your writing and gain followers. For accessibility write hashtags with the first letter of each word capitalised, it helps screen readers. You can of course sprinkle HashTags in the middle of your posts, does the same thing.
Do a search to find popular tags, eg #Humor or #Joy or #Random likley have many followers. U can follow hashtags that u search too!
