I miss when #MdouMoctar was this raw! He’s become a Jimi Hendrix-level arena rocker and I’m happy for him, but this record, Afelan, is my favorite. It’s recorded live and you can hear people clapping and hooting and hollering along while the band plays. It’s PUNK! “Chet Boghassa” makes me feel like I’m losing my mind in the best way. This is the record that introduced me to The Sahel Sound. Desert Rock. Whatever white people want to call it. Ooh—this music is deep and I don’t think a slick studio recording does it justice, but that’s just me.
