Turning the globally significant Nullarbor’s limestone cave landscape into an industrial site with suburbs ?
“They put it slap-bang on the most intensively karstified area of the Nullarbor...This issue is not just about avoiding damage to a few caves. It’s about protecting the whole landscape.”

Palaeontologists look at bones which to us look just like a rock, but they see a fossil. The problem is that bone fragments can be very fragile and so are difficult to establish the creature that they came from. But DNA is helping! But even DNA can deteriorate, so what then! Scientists have found that examining the short chains of amino acids found in ancient bones can help to determine the species.

@Broadfork The runner ducks enthusiastically forage new growth on the comfrey. So I can say the team does forage, digest, and drop comfrey enriched fertilizer. #ducksofmastodon, #megafauna, #gardening, #minnesota, #comfrey.

#StoneAgeBeasts is a book about the #megafauna of the #Pleistocene. Some of the artwork in it is a little weird, but it’s a decent introduction to these ancient creatures. Read more of my thoughts on it here:

This has got to be the most amazing thing I’ve read this week, Evidence is mounting that large sandstone caves in Amazonian South America, large enough to comfortably walk through and the longest with 1,500 metres of tunnels, were carved out by giant ground sloths. Yes, ground sloths!

“The South American palaeoburrows might be the largest ichnofossils known so far.”

A figure from a Nature news article credited to Renato Pereira Lopez showing a silhouette of a human and the dimensions of the different sandstone tunnels, the largest taller than a human, and artist reconstructions of three different extinct ground sloths with two extinct armadillo species. The largest tunnels are as tall as the largest ground sloths.
