Another thing that the City of Merri-bek passed at the meeting on Wednesday night was a resolution to start participating in a dockless bike hire program (eg. Lime bikes)
The interesting part is that the resolution required that all bike hire bikes be parked in designated areas and that all those areas will be on the road replacing car parking spaces. This means that footpaths won't be littered with hire bikes.
This is going to require hundreds of car parking spaces around the city to be converted in to bike hire parking space.
This is a great move and other city councils should do the same.
Last night the Merri-bek City council approved the "Streets for People plan" that provides a master plan for a network of streets across the city that will be targeted for upgrades to make them better for people walking and cycling.
It's a big vague plan that will be implemented on a street by street basis over decades but will hopefully allow consultations to be done in the context of a larger transportation network. It's hoped that people will be better able to see the benefits when they see how a project on their street connects in to a wider network.
The plan also includes upgrading entire streets to provide full connections instead of small ad-hoc piece-meal changes to streets that don't connect to anything in the existing network.

"..visibility of pedestrians was hampered by the crest of the hill that rises from Melville Road..."
This is one of the biggest things that worries me when I'm crossing here. The motorists can't see you until they're over the hill and you can't see them approaching and they're approaching at 60km/h. So you just have to scurry across and hope they're paying attention.
For a small child or anyone with any kind of mobility disability it's impossible to safely cross.

The maps that show how climate change is driving up the cost of insuring #Melbourne homes.
A 59% increase in insurance premiums for #Merribek since 2020. And Merri-bek was an LGA with relatively low increases compared to outer suburb and heavily forested eastern suburbs.
