There it is! My own #Gesellenkiste :ablobcatattention: A miniature #SeaChest, copy of an antique from an extinct shipyard: Howaldtswerke #Hamburg. I believe it's from their apprentice shop. One of many in the course of apprentices becoming journeymen.

Mistakes were made. Lessons were learned. Crimes were hidden, as Adam Savage would say. Just needs finish.

Oh, and hinges. And beckets. #Metalworking and #fancywork! But that will have to wait a bit. Stay tuned, I guess.

The finished (still unfinished, ie raw wood) chest on the workbench, among various handtools. It is a miniature of a classic sea chest: proud bottom on runners, rectangular planar section, sides as well as front and back slope inwards, wooden chocks for fancywork beckets on the sides, flat panel overhanging lid. The wood is planed and scraped smooth, and has a lovely light blonde color with more creamy brown growth rings. It's reclaimed pitch pine flooring, all slash sawn with flat grain, but so was the original, and that's held up perfectly for close on a hundred years. A few bits of quartersawn larch for flavor.

The new chest stood next to the original. I managed to get the size and proportions almost completely correct. Only the height is missing a couple millimeters, on account of not adding enough extra material to plane the bevel on the top and bottom edge.

Throwback to this time last year:
This was the result of the first week of knife making class last year at the #makerspace called Station North in Baltimore - mine is inspired by tibetan spiritual knives since I wanted this for my practice✨ (but make it ergonomic🤓), my partner made a butcher knife (that we totally use in our kitchen all the time🥰) - the class was for making basic kitchen knives- but I've never been one to conform👹 and the teacher was too fascinated by my design to say no to a custom design for my very first knife 😅

We learned to draft a pattern, cut the full tang blade out of a steel bar, drilled pinholes and selected wood for the handle - I chose Koa wood because it was used in weapons by Hawaiian warriors.

The maker space gets donations of tiny exotic wood scraps from a local high end furniture maker that they use for knife handles. Did you know that "koa" means "warrior" in Hawaiian?
