Far future todo.

I'm thinking to add an escapement mechanism to my metal shaper, to rotate the piece by steps at every stroke of the ram, without having to deal with servomotors, sensors, g-code, etc. when I want to make something round(ish).

After that ,it's just a matter of choosing the right gears to rotate the piece around the Y or the Z axis.

Maybe @attoparsec (who has both a metal shaper and an escapement movement as logo for his Youtube videos) has clues…

Special for heavy #machining lovers: ho to resurface an anvil 😱

My anvil is more or less the same size, and I have to resurface it, too… here is why I bought a metal shaper (for a price lower that that of the tool mounted on the mill of the video 😄 ).

«Grinding Lathe Tools Without A Bench Grinder».

Not always carbide inserts are the right choice for your turning work, because of lathe speeds, material used, budget restrains, etc.

Here you see how to give fancy shapes to your HSS lathe tools, and the lathe used for this is the "Blue Collar Barbie™" model 😮

Also, using the lathe is safer than keeping the tool with your fingers while you sharpen it on a grinder.

Lessons from spending all day in the workshop:

1) Bending metal is hard when your bender is a piece of wood and a hammer
2) Doing a test piece when welding is a good idea because it lets you dial in the parameters so you get a nice looking teat piece to comfort yourself after your work piece gets lunar cratered

Without knowing the size of the part you are repairing, it is hard to know what scale you are working on.

This is what my son and I did while he is learning #blacksmithing.

You use a propane forge. They can be purchased on amazon as long as your part isn't too big.

Multiple aluminum food trays stacked as an oil squelching pan.

This worked well when he created some steel hair pins.

Interesting accessory for the metal shaper: an indexer.

Added to my todo list: it's not the sort of thing you can find at the hardware store at the corner, usually.

cc @attoparsec (who has a nice shaper).

Uhm… rispetto alle macchine che sono abituato a vedere il tornio di questo video sembra quello della Barbie, però è venuto un buon lavoro.

This might be appear to be another "old man yells at cloud" video about how the old days and ways of doing things were the best.

Its far far more than that though.

Its basically what I was trying to say about how CNC machines for metalworking wouldn't be much use in a lifehouse as they would be scrap in a very short space of time. The guys who can make and maintain high quality machine tools are very thin on the ground now though.

A word of caution... the "AI" narration is terrible as always. Read the subtitles instead.

This video can be seen just by @MelissaBearTrix (because all other people will run away screaming).

It will raise the concept of precision #metalworking of some levels.

Just curious…

Is someone making a #welding helmet with an integrated display¹ showing the parameters set on the welder?

A fancy screen on the welder cart is fancy… but it is on the other end of the torch cable.

If nobody has yet made it feel free to apply this idea to your own helmet!

Metal teaches what modern systems have forgotten: reality has structure, standards cannot be corrupted, and weight must actually be borne.

Use metal as your standard — does it work when reality tests it, or does it just produce documentation about working?

In the forge, honest work meets honest resistance. No committees. No credentials. Just manifestation.

A silly question for all #machinists here around.

I've seen many people using Anchorlube for turning, drilling, reaming, etc. and it seems a good product; alas, I can't find it in my surrounds.

But the question is: does it smell like menthol shave foam?
The look is almost the same!

Here is a 10 years old video about it:
