I finally figured out what Avowed reminds me of, and it's not Skyrim.

It's Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven. Like a single-player action adventure RPG in the spirit of that kind of world-spanning adventure.

It's a good nostalgic feeling.

Ultima I is back-back-back with a new version for IBM PC six years after its original release, and the first game in what would become the Might & Magic series takes flight for other platforms.

I wouldn't play any of these until the Might & Magic and Ultima Collection compilation box sets of the late 90s. The Amiga versions were nowhere to be found in my neck of the woods growing up.
