Speak to enough musicians in the underground who favor the sonically depraved, and you might hear word of two New Yorkers, who emerge now and then from the doldrums of normal life to unleash their unique brand of sonic chaos upon the unsuspecting masses. I’m talking, of course, about The Austerity Program, the criminally underrated duo of Justin Foley and Thad Calabrese who have delivered some of the greatest noise rock records of the 2000s. Their signature sound of “Big Black meets unhinged mathy industrial” has always been simultaneously entertaining and hideous to behold, but it was 2019’s Bible Songs 1 that took them to another level. The Austerity Program’s songs have always unfolded like twisted fables, but with Bible Songs, their subject matter took on a new gravitas, as the duo rendered the darkest moments of the Old Testament in their sardonic snarl. Bible Songs 1 is a stunning synthesis of literature and music that gives me chills with each listen, so 6 years after the fact, I was a little apprehensive about its sequel being able to live up to my expectations. Bible Songs 2 not only meets them, but exceeds them.

Each song on Bible Songs 2 adapts short Old and New Testament passages, turning some of the Bible’s darkest verses into miniature noise-rock payloads, modernizing the language and maximizing each piece’s impact with deranged noise-rock instrumentation. Foley’s acerbic spoken delivery covers verses about the vicious destruction and suffering of Jerusalem during the Babylonian siege (“Lamentations 4:7—11”), the condemnation of man by God for his failures (“Joshua 7:6—26”), and the ultimate biblical reckoning at the end of days (“Revelation 8:7—13”). Each line is spewed with a sort of sarcastic vitriol that at once recognizes the horror of its subject matter, while also poking fun at its absurdity. Individual lines alternate between exaggerated humor, 1 and cosmic consequence. 2 Through it all, Foley’s personality and keen sense of phrasing contribute to no shortage of incredibly memorable couplets that have stuck with me all year since I first heard them.

Bible Songs 2 by The Austerity Program

Bible Songs 2 features exclusively guitar, bass, and a drum machine, yet The Austerity Program uses this sparse palette to create expansive canvases that both excite and disturb. Calabrese’s bass provides the record’s most recognizable element, a chunky, mid-pushed growl reminiscent of imperial-era Ministry or The Jesus Lizard, forming the backbone of most songs alongside the band’s signature drum machine grooves. That drum machine feels uncanny in its force and precision, functioning less like traditional percussion and more like an inhuman engine driving each track forward. Foley’s guitar operates primarily as a shrill, siren-like effect, recontextualizing riffs, adding rhythmic accents, and pushing the music into the liminal space between noise and composition. These elements converge across six tracks built on hypnotic, repeating rhythms that expand and contract between subdued chaos and total aural devastation. “Judges 19:22—29” and “Luke 3:4—9” exemplify this, but there are also more even-tempered pieces like the bass-led “Joshua 7:6—26,” the slow-build of “Zephaniah 3:1—7,” or the sonic journey of “Lamentations 4:7—11.” This is all in preparation for the closer “Revelation 8:7—13,” whose urgent tremolo riffs, inhuman snare patterns, and final burst of dissonance convincingly soundtrack the end of days. 3

Bible Songs 2 is an absolute triumph of a record. It builds on the immense strengths The Austerity Program has demonstrated in the past and weaponizes their unique brand of unsettling noise rock for a set of timely compositions that showcase just how powerful the combination of music and a fully-realized subject matter can be. It’s one of my favorite records of the year, and I’ll be quoting notable lines and blasting it for years to come.

General Staff of the Armed Forces, الحاج قاري محمد فصیح‌الدین "Fatarat," participated in the closing ceremony of a five-day seminar organized by the Operations Directorate’s Planning and Policy Deputy for 20 planning officers from various military corps and special forces.

During the seminar, the General Staff addressed the planning officers, emphasizing the value and importance of planning, and urged them to fulfill their responsibilities in a professional manner and to obey their orders. The seminar concluded with a prayer.

Twenty-three young personnel from the Topchi Directorate have completed their training course on the Milan (9M135) guided rocket system.

Twenty-three young personnel from border units and special units have graduated after successfully completing the fourth one-month course of practical and theoretical training on the Milan (9M135) guided rocket system, in the presence of Mawlawi Rahmtullah "Nazim," Director of Topchi; Mawlawi Tawab Al-Hadi “Tayeb Omar,” Commander of Recruitment and Mobilization; Mawlawi Siddiqullah "Mastery," Instructor of Guided Missiles; and a number of officials and personnel from the Ministry of National Defense.

Officials, in their remarks, emphasized that the graduates must bravely defend the country's borders, fully protect government property (weapons), be diligent in performing assigned tasks, fully pursue their objectives, and not allow anyone to view the borders and the country's territorial integrity with malicious intent.

Emphasis was also placed on readiness for any reciprocal response.

The graduates pledged to perform the entrusted responsibilities to the best of their ability.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of certificates to the graduates.

۲۳ تن از منسوبین جوان قطعات سرحدی و قطعات خاص، پس از تکمیل موفقانهٔ دورهٔ چهارم آموزش‌های عملی و نظری یک‌ماههٔ دستگاه راکت رهبری‌شده میلان (9M135)، در حضور ملا رحمت‌الله «ناظم» رئیس توپچی، مولوی تراب‌الهادی «طیب عمر» قوماندان جلب و جذب، ملا صدیق‌الله «مستری» استاد مرمی رهبری‌شده، و شماری از مسئولین و منسوبین وزارت دفاع ملی، فارغ شدند.

مسئولین در سخنان خود تأکید نمودند که فارغان باید با شجاعت از سرحدات کشور دفاع نمایند، از سلاح بیت‌المال به‌گونه‌ای کامل حفاظت کنند، در انجام وظایف محوله کوشا باشند، اهداف خویش را به‌صورت کامل تعقیب نمایند و به هیچ‌کس اجازه ندهند تا به سرحدات و تمامیت ارضی کشور با دید سوء بنگرد.

همچنان بر آمادگی برای هرگونه پاسخ متقابل تأکید شد.

فارغان نیز تعهد سپردند که مسئولیت‌های سپرده‌شده را به وجه احسن انجام خواهند داد.

این مراسم با اهدای تصدیق‌نامه به فارغان به پایان رسید.

The General of the Armed Forces, الحاج قاري محمد فصیح الدین "فطرت", held a meeting for coordination and cooperation with experts on the country’s political and military affairs and senior officials and representatives of the media.

The meeting was attended by the Head of the Office of the Ministry of National Defense, الحاج قاري محمد فصیح الدین "فطرت", الحاج مولوي خان محمد “Nusrat”, the Operations Director, مولوي نور الرحمن “Nusrat,” a number of officials from the ministry, experts on the country’s political and military affairs, and representatives of the media.

The General of the Armed Forces, الحاج قاري محمد فصیح الدین "فطرت", welcomed the media representatives and political analysts and added: “Above all, our and your priority is the freedom and security of the country. It was inappropriate to see the suffering of our countrymen, their service is necessary for us and you. The focus of our security forces is also to ensure the safety of the people and provide them with all kinds of conveniences.”

He also thanked the senior representatives of the media for playing their role in ensuring security and standing shoulder to shoulder with our defense forces. He stated that nations that do not stand on their own feet and rely on others, even if they grow, cannot move forward. In the past four years, our National Islamic Army forces have spared no effort in defending and protecting the country. Our army is now standing on its own feet.

He added: “We and you are the children of this homeland. We must shake hands with each other and build the country together, assist our forces, and contribute to the construction of the homeland. We will build an army that defends the borders, sovereignty, and freedom of our country, and we will strive to equip it with modern weapons to defend its territory in all circumstances. Our army has demonstrated to the people that anyone who looks at the country with a bad eye will be answered with courage, and our neighbors have also been shown that anyone who attempts to interfere in Afghanistan will receive a hundredfold response.”

Our National Islamic Army forces have also demonstrated to the people that they have stood side by side with their people in all divine disasters and other incidents, and have served them. At the end, I assure you and the people that our National Islamic Army will not be negligent in the area of progress and will be at the service of the people day and night.

Following this, the former generals, experts on the country’s political and military affairs, and media representatives expressed their views and reaffirmed their support for the Ministry of National Defense in safeguarding their Islamic and national values. The meeting concluded with a gracious statement.
