Shoofly pie was a favourite when I was growing up - still is today! :-)
My Mom used to make it and as a kid I would help prepare the ingredients, cutting margarine into flour and brown sugar.
Though I asked, she never gave me a recipe (I think she did it from memory), but I managed to find one in an old Mennonite cookbook when I was at University.
Here it is, going mainstream!

If we have the privilege of a stove, a saucepan & access to shops, whole grains are easy & so yum.
I love #porridge for this. I use a base of #quinoa flakes with linseed meal & chia, then add whatever else feels like fun - currently black #rice for gorgeous #purple colour, #amaranth for crunch, or #buckwheat for winter stodge. Maybe #sunflower seeds for added texture. Eat with #tahini (black tahini tastes amazing & looks like motor oil, wierd breakfast!) & #honey or #molasses, keeps me full for hours. Also delicious!
Even better for distractable me, I can start this when I wake up (put mixture in pot with plenty of water, bring to boil then put lid on & turn down to 1 on the induction cooktop) & even if I forget about it for hours it’s still perfect when I come back.
I love food.

I'm at that point of accepting I might not be in my place much longer and am beginning to address my slight prepping tendencies. (I refuse to say hoarding.) So, a small bit of black strap unsulfured molasses into my decaf coffee just now coz I'm out of half and half and why not. And because I need to use up what I can't take to the food bank. Someone's gotta do it. It's an interesting flavor in strong coffee. Like pioneer days? And the shelf life is forever. #molasses #coffee
@geekgirl @johngrey @elStiko I eat #plantbased for health reasons rather than moral reasons. I don't usually have #honey because it's healthier to use #datesugar (and #molasses in my oatmeal). But bees, left to their own devices, produce way more honey than they can use. The ethical argument about industrial honey is stronger than about locally produced honey. It's so great that you're sourcing it compassionately.

Blackstrap molasses (AKA treacle) is a byproduct of cane sugar production - it is the liquid left after the sugar cane is boiled and sugar extracted. It doesn’t contain much sugar and can be very bitter.
