The Trolley Dilemma: Pie or Pi(e)
Imagine you're on a trolley, cruising down the tracks of life, when suddenly you spot a fork up ahead. The trolley, which currently holds a single world-renowned mathematician, is barreling towards a group of five famous chefs. The mathematician is deep in thought, scribbling equations on a napkin, oblivious to the impending collision. The chefs, on the other hand, are happily decorating a massive pie, their latest creation for the International Pie Festival.
If you decide not to pull the lever, the trolley will continue on its current path, leading to the unfortunate demise of the five chefs. The pie, now forever unbaked, becomes a legend in culinary circles as "The Pie That Could Have Been."
If you pull the lever, the trolley will switch tracks, saving the chefs but at the cost of the mathematician. His unfinished napkin will be lost, containing the missing proof to the Riemann Hypothesis, which would have forever altered the course of mathematics. The pie, however, wins the festival, and the chefs become household names.
So, what do you do? Pull the lever and choose a world of delicious desserts, or let the trolley continue and preserve the future of mathematics?
