The centre of the ship, like a mammoth shark’s fin, now appears above the breakers upon which the unmasted hull has been impaled, and that is all that is visible of the wreck. The masts, sails and numberless spars and fragments from the splintered vessel, together with many hundreds of cases and bales of cargo, bestrew the rocks to the mainland, and shortly after news was received of the disaster the battered body of the captain was hauled out from among the wreckage." The Sierra Nevada was bound from Liverpool with a cargo that consisted chiefly of whiskey and paper. She sighted Cape Otway on Tuesday morning, and before a favouring breeze made good progress towards Melbourne. At nightfall the lookout sighted the Heads, and there was every prospect of entering the harbor early in the morning. Soon, however, the wind veered around to the south, and as it steadily increased in strength, sail was shortened and everything made taut and apparently safe. The ship continued on her way without increased portents of danger until 11 p.m. Then, above the lashing of the waves and the roar of the wind, the voice of Geo. McGuffin, the man on the lookout, was heard proclaiming ominous warning, “Breakers ahead!”

Located at the back beach of Blairgowrie between Dimmicks Beach and Bridgewater Bay, Pearses Beach is a small beach with bathing only at mid to high tide. Be very cautious of the rocks and reef on and off the beach and the steep drop off beyond the reef. This beach does not have surfable waves. There is a coastal walking track across the dunes from the end of Pearse's Road through tea tree which is the best way to view and enjoy this beach rather than swimming. Be cautious and aware of the hooded plovers nesting on the beach between August and April. There is a small car park at the end of Pearses Road with a track leading down to the beach.

The bay forms a large natural amphitheater surrounded by impressive sandstone cliffs. There is a sandy section of beach between the rock formations. The beach is not patrolled and considered dangerous for swimming due to the exposed rocks, reefs, and surf. Keep an eye on the tides and waves, and wear sensible footwear as some of the rocks are covered in slippery seaweed. A walking track to the bay starts at a small car park at the end of St Johns Wood Road and a steep staircase descends from the cliffs to the beach below. Stunning views are available from the walking track west towards Spray Point and as you descend the staircase to the beach. The beach is also accessible as part of the Coastal Walk.

The main spot was Dragon's Head Rock on the Rye back beach. This is one of Melbourne's most popular spots for photographers, and at low tide the rock is revealed on a rock shelf with water streaming down below. Low tide is the ideal time, and when that lines up sunrise or sunset - perfection! This weekend low tide was closer to the middle of the day, so I popped out to grab a few shots. The day was a bit overcast, but I didn't really mind because there's enough action going on in the foreground and mid-ground to compose a great image. The contrasting yellow of the rock in front of a largely monochrome blue background stands out quite well. The spectacular rock formations makes this pristine ocean beach a must visit destination for photographers. Number 16 Beach is best visited at low tide to explore the rock pools, catch a fish or to get the best shot of 'Dragon Head Rock'. The rocks are covered in seaweed and extremely slippery so it is best to wear practical footwear...
