Clase man jailed after breaching restraining order and violence against women

37-year-old Christian Ace attempted to add one victim on social media following his release from prison in 2024.

In April 2025, Ace’s violence towards another victim, punching her to the head at least twenty times, left her with significant facial injuries and resulted in hospitalisation.

He has been sentenced to 26 months in prison.

Detective Inspector Danielle Thorne from South Wales Police said: “Christian Ace is a dangerous man and a serial abuser of women, and is subject of four restraining orders by four different women.

“His offences against multiple different women were identified through the hard work of PC George Henderson and the team in Morriston.

“We abhor the horrendous experiences that Christian Ace has put his victims through, and the only place for him is prison. We hope no other women have Christian enter their lives in future.”

Morriston teen locked-up after deliberately driving into a man and fracturing his skull

The incident took place on Approach Road in Cwmbwrla after the Swansea v Cardiff football derby at the Swansea.com stadium.

Swansea Crown Court heard that Mitchell Jones drove his car “aggressively” up and down the road, mounting the pavement, revving the car engine, and trying to “intimidate” a group of Swans fans who had left the Gatehouse pub and were heading for a taxi.

In response, a glass bottle was thrown at Jones’ Volkswagen Polo car and items such as bin bags were tossed into the street to block his way.

Jones then swerved his car across the road and drove into a 20-year-old man who was part of the group.

He then drove away following the incident.

The victim suffered a bleed on the brain and had to have an operation to remove part of his skull to relieve pressure on the brain as a result of the collision, which also left the victim with a fractured left forearm after running him over, which required surgery.

After pleading guilty to dangerous driving and grievous bodily harm with intent he has been sentenced to three years and four months in a young offender institution.

He has been banned from driving for three years and three months.

Detective Inspector Stuart Prendiville from South Wales Police said: “Mitchel Jones is clearly a hot-headed young man who has thrown some of the best years of his life away with his disgraceful actions.

“He showed no remorse for what he had done, or for the lasting damage which he has done to the victim. He drove off without even a slight consideration for the victim’s wellbeing.

“He will now spend a considerable time off the streets – but that will be of scant consolation to the victim and his family.”

Morriston couple win Urdd award for dedication to promoting Welsh language and culture

David Gwyn and Pamela John from Morriston have been announced as the winners of the John and Ceridwen Hughes, Uwchaled Award at Eisteddfod yr Urdd Dur a Môr Parc Margam a’r Fro 2025.

Known as pillars of the local community, the married couple have dedicated themselves tirelessly over the decades to promoting the Welsh language and culture among the children and young people of the area. The John and Ceridwen Hughes, Uwchaled Award recognises outstanding volunteers who have made a significant contribution to the life of young people in Wales. Considering David and Pamela’s contribution, it comes as no surprise that they are this year’s winners.

In the early 1960s, they established ‘Aelwyd yr Urdd Treforys’ in the vestry of the Tabernacle Chapel in Morriston. For the first time, it gave young people in the area an opportunity to socialise through the Welsh language. It was a place full of buzz and enthusiasm, and under David and Pamela’s leadership, the ‘aelwyd’ competed regularly at Eisteddfod yr Urdd, at the National Eisteddfod and at the Cerdd Dant Festival. It also hosted many a Noson Lawen (light entertainment concerts) throughout south Wales.

Presenter Heledd Cynwal had the honour of announcing the news at Tabernacle Chapel, Morriston, yesterday.

Helping local young people to “discover their Welshness”

Among more than 100 members of ‘Aelwyd yr Urdd Treforys’ that would meet every Friday evening were musician and composer, Geraint Davies (from the folk group, Mynediad am Ddim), and the late singer and actor, Dewi Pws. The latter once stated in an interview that he “discovered his Welshness” at the age of fifteen at the Urdd Aelwyd in the Morriston chapel.

Musician Geraint Davies (and composer of ‘Hei Mistar Urdd’) said: “I was fifteen when I joined Aelwyd Treforys in 1968 and without doubt it changed my life. David Gwyn and Pam John had been at the helm for some time and would be for many years afterwards. Remarkably, with some unruly individuals, they managed to establish choirs, folk dance groups and Noson Lawen performers that were among the finest in Wales.

“There was an open door for Welsh speakers and non-Welsh speakers alike at a time when secondary education in Swansea was all in English. This was the antidote – being immersed in the Welsh language every Friday night and sometimes on Saturday as well. The big bonus was that David had a bus driving licence, so it enabled us to travel regularly to other aelwydydd, to national events, and as far away as Scotland in 1970. It broadened our horizons. I found a life partner in that aelwyd too, and I’m one of many who did so.

“They’re still active years later – running the activities of ‘Cymdeithas Gymraeg Treforys’ (Morriston’s Welsh Society). Thank you and congratulations David and Pam!”

Before retiring, both worked in education and loved supporting and promoting the young people of the area. David was Headteacher at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Lôn Las and Pamela was a teacher there. Both have also been active on various local committees and on Eisteddfod sub-committees and have fundraised locally. They celebrated their Diamond Wedding last summer.

Llio Maddocks, Director of the Arts, Urdd Gobaith Cymru, said: “These are two well-loved and popular individuals who have contributed so much to the Welshness of the area where this year’s Eisteddfod is held. They are fully deserving of the John and Ceridwen Hughes, Uwchaled Award 2025. We need volunteers and people like David and Pamela in our local areas: people who are willing to dedicate their precious time to support young people. Their contribution is invaluable and we’re grateful for their tireless work over the decades.”

David and Pamela will be honoured in a special ceremony at Eisteddfod yr Urdd Dur a Môr 2025. The John and Ceridwen Hughes, Uwchaled Award is given by Dewi and Gerallt Hughes, in memory of their parents, John and Ceridwen Hughes, who were very active in youth work.

‘Violent’ Morriston boxer jailed for breaking man’s jaw in bar brawl and assaulting ex-girlfriend

23-year-old Korben Crocker, from Morriston, made unwanted advances towards a woman at a bar on Swansea’s Wind Street during a night out in the early hours of Sunday March 31 2024. He then launched a violent assault on the woman’s boyfriend when he was asked to stop.

The assault left the victim with a broken jaw and required the victim attend hospital to have metal plates fitted.

Later in 2024, Crocker committed another assault – this time against an ex-partner – during which he used both hands to strangle her and left her with swollen eyes and lips and cuts in multiple places on her head. He then fled from the victim’s home.

Despite pleading not guilty to both offences, Crocker was found guilty at Swansea Crown Court and has now been sentenced to combined three years in prison.

Sergeant Kelly Richards from South Wales Police said: “Korben Crocker is a violent young man who is not only unable to control his anger, but also acts proudly about the injuries he causes to his victims as if they are some kind of honour to him.

“They are nothing to be proud about – they have resulted in him being sentenced to years in prison. Violent people like Korben have no place in society, and it is great to see that he will be locked up.

“I hope that both of his victims are pleased with the court outcome and will take comfort in the knowledge that Korben cannot do them any further harm.”

Trickster jailed after burgling elderly woman

43-year-old Melanie Morgan, of no fixed abode, entered an address on Morris Street, Morriston on March 28.

After speaking with the elderly occupant, who was unknown to her, Morgan made off with a purse that had been in the living room after the victim had left the room to find Morgan a painkiller and to call her a taxi.

The victim noticed the purse was missing the following day.

Swansea Crown Court heard that it was not the first time that Morgan had tricked her way into someone’s home before burgling them, having done so repeatedly over two decades. She has 16 previous convictions for 38 offences including thefts from shops, aggravated vehicle taking and handling stolen goods.

Judge Huw Rees said Morgan had a “devious streak” and only thought of herself.

Morgan pleaded guilty to burglary and has been sentenced to 45 months in prison.

Detective Sergeant Kristian Burt from South Wales Police said: “Melanie Morgan callously and shamelessly took advantage of the kindness of her elderly victim.

“As the judge said, Melanie Morgan has a devious streak and is a woman who only thinks about herself.

“We hope that she instead thinks about her actions during her time in prison.”

Howzat! New cricket facilities to be installed at two busy Swansea pitches

The grounds at Ashleigh Road and Tir Canol are each to have two new non-turf pitches.

It’ll mean reduced maintenance costs and a consistent, high-quality playing surface.

Council cabinet member Robert Francis Davies said: “Swansea’s a sporting city and these high-quality new additions will help cricket thrive here for many years to come.

“Hundreds of matches take place across the area every summer; from this season even more will be played thanks to these fantastic new pitches.”

Cricket Wales facilities investment manager Victoria Jones said: “As we introduce new non-turf pitches across Swansea, we are not only increasing capacity but also creating essential opportunities for the rapidly growing women and girls’ game.

“The exponential growth of participation in cricket demands innovative solutions to ensure everyone has equal access to sports.

“I’m excited to see how these new facilities will positively impact our community and further promote inclusivity in the game.”

Work started this week on Swansea’s first two pitches which will be added to the existing cricket squares at King George V Playing Fields, Ashleigh Road, off Mumbles Road.

Two further non-turf pitches will be added in the coming weeks at Tir Canol, Morriston. One will replace an existing strip, the other will be a new addition.

The plan is for them all to be available for use in the 2025 season.

All the new pitches are accredited by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

They’re being developed by the council in partnership with the sport’s Welsh governing body Cricket Wales who have provided the funding through the ECB and The Hundred competition’s Everyone In participation project.

At the end of the 2025 season, the council plans to work with the two governing bodies to improve the existing grass surfaces at Ashleigh Road, Tir Canol and Mynydd Newydd playing fields.

That work is due to be completed for use by the 2026 season.

The Hobbit takes a Welsh twist at Morriston Library

Adam Pearce will be talking about how he translated JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit into Welsh for the first time at two events – one in Welsh, the other in English at 1pm and 2pm, respectively.

Translated as Yr Hobyd, The Hobbit tells of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Middle Earth, dragons, treasure and a ring of gold and Adam Pearce brings it all to life through the medium of Welsh.

To go along to the event on Saturday, you must book free tickets by calling 01792 516770 or by emailing Morriston.library@swansea.gov.uk

Elliott King, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Equalities, said: “Any fan of a book that was already legendary before the amazing films brought it to an even wider audience, will want to find out more about how Adam translated The Hobbit into Welsh.

“The Hobbit has already been translated into many languages, from Dutch and Latin to Esperanto and Faroese, but never into Welsh. So to have Adam at one of our libraries discussing how and why he did it, is quite a coup.”

Adam has previously translated H.G. Wells into Welsh and works by T. Gwynn Jones and Daniel Owen from Welsh into English.

His translation of The Hobbit has been prepared in accordance with J.R.R. Tolkien’s own instructions for translators of his work and officially licenced by the Tolkien Estate.

Included are J.R.R. Tolkien’s original illustrations and new Welsh versions of the two maps featured in the original novel.

Thirty-eight-year-old Daryl Jones, who has been with First Cymru for almost 10 years and is based at the company’s Ravenhill depot in Swansea, was named the best competitor from a depot in Wales at the bus industry’s prestigious UK Bus Driver of the Year contest. The title also clinched him a £100 prize.

Other First Bus results included fifth place in the UK for Clive Sutton from First North and West Yorkshire, and sixth place overall for Stuart Beetison from First West of England’s Weston-super-Mare depot who was also named First Bus’ second best bus driver across the country and scooped a £500 prize.

Doug Claringbold, Managing Director for First Cymru and First West of England, said: “Congratulations to all those who took part in the competition at the weekend, and in particular to Daryl for being named Wales’ best driver, and to Stuart for grabbing sixth place overall and being named the second best bus driver in the whole of First Bus. Both have achieved excellent results which they should be very proud of.

“But it isn’t just about these two colleagues; we had a host of other local drivers from Bristol, Bath, Wales, Worcester and the rest of the West of England also competing, who were all put through their paces against 100 other top drivers across the country. Getting the chance to compete in such a prestigious competition in the bus industry is a great honour for those taking part.”

This was the 56th UK Bus Driver of the Year awards, which are annually held in Blackpool, where competitors are put through their paces in a competition on the seafront that sees them compete for the sought-after Driver of the Year top prize.

On competition day, those taking part are tasked with working for a fictitious bus company, and are all expected to adhere to the company’s code of conduct, including rules on dress code, drink and drugs policies and its general driving style.

The day simulates the driver’s normal day, with each driver receiving their own personal timetable, and for up to four hours, the Bus Driver of the Year awards operates the most intensive bus service in the UK, with competitors leaving every two minutes on the three-mile course where they are judged for about 20 minutes.

When the Hub opens, it will offer a counter service operated by the Post Office, where customers of all major banks can carry out regular cash transactions, Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. It will also offer a Community Banker service where customers can talk to their own bank about more complicated issues on the day their bank is in the Hub. Community Bankers will work on rotation, with a different bank available on each day of the week.

Cash Access UK have said that finding the right location for a Banking Hub that is convenient, accessible and works for everyone often takes time, so the organisation says it is delighted to have been able to secure convenient premises in the heart of the community. This development is a significant step forward in bringing a Banking Hub to Morriston.

The Hub will open later this year, and the team at Cash Access UK say they are now working hard to fit out the new premises and will update the community on progress and an opening date as soon as they can. The Morriston Banking Hub page on the Cash Access UK website will provide updates as works progress.

The Hub was recommended by LINK, the UK’s cash access and ATM network, following the announcement of the closure of the town’s last remaining bank branch in August 2022.

There are currently five Banking Hubs open across Wales, located in Abergele, Prestatyn, Porthcawl, Treorchy and Welshpool. Alongside Morriston’s new Hub, Cash Access UK are also working on Hubs in Abertillery, Flint, Mountain Ash and Risca.

Gareth Oakley, CEO at Cash Access UK: “It’s great news that we have secured a location for our Banking Hub in Morriston. It’s a big step forward we’ll keep the community updated as it progresses.”

In 1970 Swansea Council gardeners planted 200 Scots pine saplings in 11 areas of the #Kilvey Hill copper tips. The areas were heavily toxic, but Scots p.were thought to have a good chance of survival as they were traditionally planted on Welsh coal waste. The saplings were probably raised in the 'Gasworks Nursery' in #Morriston being the main tree nursery for the #LowerSwanseaValleyProject of the 1960s.
