On this day in 1968 (9 December) Douglas Engelbart gave what became known as "The Mother of All Demos", publicly debuting the computer mouse, hypertext, and the bit-mapped graphical user interface using the computer system NLS.

""The Mother of All Demos" was a landmark computer demonstration of [...] many of the fundamental elements of modern personal computing: windows, hypertext, graphics, efficient navigation and command input, video conferencing, the computer mouse, word processing, dynamic file linking, revision control, and a collaborative real-time editor."

Is it possible to have a #WebService which shows in #RealTime how #trends are being manipulated, falsehoods spread, #disinformation disseminated?
Then apps/website could tag information's reliability, or expose the chain of influence to show who is benefiting.
Doesn't sound too difficult. I mean, compared to 1968's #MotherOfAllDemos.
Isn't this what #technology is for, augmenting humans?
Ha, that’s what “dealing lightning with both hands” really looks like
Engelbart's law: the intrinsic rate of human performance is exponential. On this 55th anniversary of his seminal "mother of all demos", Douglas Engelbart's observation that we can improve on our improvements remains valid, but I also wonder if we're entering a new phase of improvement wrt LLMs where the ability to improve will not just be in the sphere of humanity, but also in the sphere of machines as co-creators.
Just a reminder that today — December 9, 2023 — is the 55th anniversary of “The Mother of All Demos,” the 1968 demonstration of technology that we all use today, but must have seemed like pure science fiction back then.

@tarek I've read the latter - it's great. These days I take Stewart Brand the man with a very large pinch of salt. But he was Silicon Valley's Zelig. He was involved in technical assistance during #Englebart's #MotherOfAllDemos.
Before there were #SV #tech #AI #ML demos, there was their 'mother'. Rewatching Doug Engelbart's "The Mother of All Demos"

The history of #PARC and #SRI is the history of computing.
Fun tidbit: Engelbart apparently 'dealt lightning with both hands'. Research presenters at PARC were called 'dealers of lightning'. PARC still holds a weekly 'Dealer' seminar.

Friendgineers: The mother of all demos happened 54 years ago today. If you ever wanted to know where it all came from, this is where.
Today in #ComputingHistory:
#DouglasEngelbart delivers the #MotherOfAllDemos on this day in 1968.

I'm a bit late to post about it this year, but it's the anniversary of the #MotherOfAllDemos today!
This demonstration is _still_ mindblowing to me.
From wikipedia:
> "The Mother of All Demos" is a name retroactively applied to a landmark computer demonstration, given at the Association for Computing Machinery / Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (ACM/IEEE)—Computer Society's Fall Joint Computer Conference in San Francisco, by Douglas Engelbart, on December 9, 1968.
>
> The live demonstration featured the introduction of a complete computer hardware and software system called the oN-Line System or, more commonly, NLS. The 90-minute presentation demonstrated for the first time many of the fundamental elements of modern personal computing: windows, hypertext, graphics, efficient navigation and command input, video conferencing, the computer mouse, word processing, dynamic file linking, revision control, and a collaborative real-time editor. Engelbart's presentation was the first to publicly demonstrate all of these elements in a single system. The demonstration was highly influential and spawned similar projects at Xerox PARC in the early 1970s. The underlying concepts and technologies influenced both the Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows graphical user interface operating systems in the 1980s and 1990s.

I'm going to watch The Mother of all demos again today to honour this legendary engineer.
