Finished A Cruel God Reigns (Zankoku Na Kami Ga Shihai Suru) by Moto Hagio. And I'm struggling for words. I've read deep and psychologically disturbing manga before, and this one has all the rights to join their ranks. Its exploration of the topic of abuse and devastating effect it has on a person left me speechless. It goes deep under your skin and stays there, gnawing, troubling. It's visceral, raw and at the same time incredibly artistic. I've never seen depiction of trauma being done in such a crystal clear way. Those manga panels are beautiful but painful all the while. I'm hesitant about its 2nd half and ending and have doubts that I'll ever be able to reread it, but Moto Hagio is deservedly a legend for creating manga like that.

It's like riding a very elaborate elevator, all mirrors and fancy buttons, but it's confined and you know you're descending into darkness in it

Finally plucked up enough courage to start Moto Hagio's manga A Cruel God Reigns (Zankoku Na Kami Ga Shihai Suru).
The very first page says "Let me tell you about the tragedy". And you know what? I'm 100% sure she's going to deliver on that promise. It's hard to say I wasn't warned, right?

Have I told you how much I adore The Heart of Thomas. Well I do. Here are photos I took at the exhibition of Moto Hagio in Angouleme. Yes, I cried. I never thought I’d get to see an exhibition by her.

Je suis content· juste de voir les éblouissantes illustrations de Moto Hagio, mais ici, on a en plus un récit de science-fiction onirique, labyrinthique, complexe et qu'on déplie petit à petit au cours des chapitres et arrivé à la fin de ce premier tome, on ne sait toujours pas où ça va mener, ce qui est vrai et ce qui tient du rêve ce qui complimente certainement la narration impeccable de ce récit.

Couverture du manga Barbara, le couverture montre un jeune homme aux sourcils dessiné dans un habit bleu. Derrière lui, il y a des espèces de modules futuristes superposés avec des trous ronds en leur centre.

Last time I used regionally appropriate dialect in a translation of #Hagio’s Poe Clan, a reviewer complained. What are they going to say when they see the new Poe stories, which begin on #Anglesey, where the majority of residents speak Welsh? To top it off, it’s set in 1944, when the percentage was presumably higher. Time to find a #Welsh consultant. I’m totally serious. Un des mangas les plus somptueux qu'il m'ait été donné de lire, ce n'est pas étonnant qu'il est considéré comme ayant influencé le genre du shōjo pour les décennies à suivre.

Couverture de Le Clan des Poe volume 1, une illustration des femmes qu'on imagine très belle, en robe de nuit et aux cheveux blonds qui tient des roses dans ses main et possède un assez long coup qu'elle doit pencher pour rentrer complètement dans l'image, mais les cheveux déborde de l'image qui est encadré par une bordure jaune.
