It's been 45 years since the Mount St. Helens eruption in Washington state. British Columbians who were young adults at the time remember how the sky changed as the volcanic ash arrived.

I have completed my annual listen of Symphony No. 50, Op. 360, Mount St. Helens by Alan Hovhaness in honor of the eruption of #MountStHelens.
I played that symphony two or three times back in the day. It's not the most complex piece of music but it's quite fun to perform. Especially the third movement.

"What scientists have learned from Mount St. Helens’ devastating eruption, 45 years later" by Public Broadcasting System PBS News - Interview with Steve Olson of Seattle, author of "Eruption: The Untold Story of Mount St. Helens". The massive landslide and lateral blast took everyone by surprise, exposing that evacuation areas were drawn too small. 54 of 57 fatalities that day were people outside the "red zone". https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/what-scientists-have-learned-from-mount-st-helens-devastating-eruption-45-years-later #MountStHelens #MSH45 #volcano #geology #PNW #history #TDIH

On this day in 1980, Mount St Helens erupted. I was living in Vancouver, Canada at the time and distinctly remember hearing the rumble - all those miles away. Watching the TV later in the day, the devastation was breathtaking.
Also encouraged folks closer to Mt Rainer and Baker to give them more than a sideways glance and to consider what they are capable of.

How gophers brought Mount St. Helens back to life in one day https://phys.org/news/2024-11-gophers-brought-mount-st-helens.html
"When #MountStHelens erupted in 1980, lava incinerated anything living for miles around. As an experiment, scientists later dropped #gophers onto parts of the mountain for only 24 hours. The benefits from that single day were undeniable—and still visible 40 years later... scientists theorized that, by digging up beneficial #bacteria and #fungi, gophers might be able to help regenerate lost life on the mountain"
