Mt Diablo from the north.
It was a beautiful day in Black Diamond Mines Park for a run, though it did get a bit warm by the end.

My boys surprised me this morning by showing up unannounced about halfway through my second cup of coffee "Come on old man, time for a birthday hike!"

Grabbed the dog and off we went!

Did five miles in the hills of Mt. Diablo (~1000 feet of climbing), and had a great time. Afterwards they took me to mexxis.com for lunch.

Most of the green is gone from the grass on Mt Diablo and the foothills.

View from #BorgesRanch / Hannah Grove trail on yesterday's short mountain bike ride.

Photo of Mt Diablo. Most all the grass in the photo has turned various shades of yellow, beige, and brown. Clear blue sky along the upper portion of the photo, yellow grass and a smattering of green oak trees in the foreground.

Saw swifts carving the airspace above #MtDiablo, boomerang-shaped, streaking like fighter jets. Thrilling! (not my pic)

A curious #hummingbird gave me a good, long look-over halfway up #MtDiablo as if to ask, what are you doing here? Mating checkerspots tussled. Saw my first swifts in the wild.

Snow on Mt. Diablo this morning, as seen from Redwood Shores, CA. #sfbay #mtdiablo #snow

A large, rounded, heavy-looking mountain squats behind a California suburban mix of dark green, domesticated trees. The mountain wears a spotty dusting of snow and a jaunty wisp of cloud at its peak. In the foreground, a wind-rippled bay abuts a muddy bank topped with bright green grass.

Friday afternoon bike ride.

#MtDiablo basking in the late-afternoon sun.

Highlights included:

* Seeing two young families with photographers out on the fire roads (probably taking pictures for their holiday cards)

* A tarantula crossing the road at #BorgesRanch

Photo of a brown, dirt road. The shadow of a person astride a mountain bike is visible in the lower left of the photo. The grass on both sides of the road and in the distant hills is golden-brown. The blue sky with wisps of white clouds is visible at the top of the photo.

A beautiful Friday in the #sfba! I feel so lucky…

The views are a juicy treat— walking around #BuenaVistaPark, with water out there in the distance on all sides, #GoldenGateBridge and #MtDiablo, not to mention #sutrotower and Mr #karlthefog… my oh MY!

And: I’m perceiving some little signals of positive change… and crap too, of course.

I live in a place where people put benches on the side of their houses for passersby to “spend the time of day.”

Now that’s a dandy phrase AND a wonderful neighborly spirit!

Barely visible street crossing showing the side of a Victorian store in dark teal, with several people walking and two sitting on benches attached to the building, nicely dealing with diagonal angles of the street rising from right to left at the bottom. And a round bike rack in the center.

Two Checkerspot Butterflies

We took a short hike up Mitchell Canyon at Mt Diablo State Park yesterday. Plenty of butterflies (swallowtails and checkerspots) and some wildflowers too. I couldn't quite figure out which variety these two were. The upper one looks like either a Leanira Checkerspot or a Variable Checkerspot. The lower one looks like a Northern Checkerspot.

Two butterflies, tail to tail. The upper butterfly is brown with patches of off-white and orange. The lower butterfly is mostly patches of orange. They are perched on a green leaf with other leaves, stems, and thorns in the background.

Monday Morning Bike Ride (or "Mt Diablo and the Foothills are Turning Brown")

I stopped at this spot and all I could hear were birds chirping and the occasional jet rumbling overhead at 15,000 feet. I lingered for 5 or 10 minutes.

The word that came to mind was "restorative."

A view of Mt Diablo with the surrounding foothills and grasslands in the foreground. Mt Diablo and the hills are turning from green to brown. The sky is blue and there are no people in the photo.

Met this absolutely adorable #spood today in Mt Diablo. Thought she was lookin a little starry eyed. #MtDiablo #berkeleyadventures youtu.be/fBf2v4mLM8k

Took the afternoon off to #GetOutside. As you can see it was terrible. Oh well, if someone has to suffer through these views, why not let it be me. Mt Diablo State Park, Contra Costa County, California.

The most beautiful view of Mt. Diablo, anytime of year, is from the east in Brentwood at the end of Hwy 4.

Just took this pic about an hour ago off of Sellers just north of Brentwood Blvd and it is epic!

BTW, the symbol of Brentwood is a silhouette of the twin peaks of Mt. Diablo as seen from the east.
